Fuel Filler Cap Opening

Apologies, new member and hoping to find some answers to my problem.

Just bought a 2015/6 MX5 Sport Nav ND and having an irritation with fuel flap keeps popping slightly open during driving. I have checked on line manuals which suggest electric button next to bonnet catch or pull tag in “glove box”. I do not have either of these - no cable and no electrical wiring.

I had found a spring assembly missing on flap and replaced this but flap still pops open when driving.

How do I stop filler flap popping open?

Is it simply using door/filler flap lock after entering car?

Actually love driving this car, children, friends and neighbours are almost queuing up to try it.

It brings so many smiles to so many faces,

I assume it’s nowt to do with the lock as the flap is unlocked while driving, assuming the doors are unlocked? Easy enough to check that the locking pin is working - you should not be able to open the flap when the car’s locked.

This suggests a work around which is to lock the doors when driving (using the locking button by the internal door handle). The flap won’t be able to come open when it’s locked.

There are two other things going on besides the locking pin. One is the spring push latch that pushes the flap open when you release it by pressing the flap. It’s covered with a rubber bellows - is this latch present and working? The other is the mysterious force that keeps it shut - I can’t fathom that at all. MX-5 parts lists a “lid lift spring” which makes little sense as the push latch pushes the lid up. It says it’s fitted to the hinge but I can’t see it from the outside. Maybe mine is missing. Is this the spring you replaced?

Lid Lift Spring is fitted in the hidden section of the fuel cap, between the hinge and the mounting bolts. My problem was that every time I drove the car, the fuel cap popped open about 1 or 2 cm as if I had pressed it to open. I only got the car one month ago and have no manual but, using on line searches, have identified that I do not have push button or Pull Tag to unlock/open flap.
I fitted a new “lid lift spring, bush and plastic cap” and flap now is staying shut without having to use locking facility.
One thing to watch out for is that flap bolts are very small and they could possibly fall down tank breather tube, I covered mine with tape before I started as a precaution.
