Fuel smell in cabin

  1. My model of MX-5 is: __NBFL Sport
  2. I’m based near: __London
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: __fuel smell

Hi all, when I drive my MX5 there is an intermittent, and quite overpowering smell of petrol in the cabin.

It’s definitely not coming from under the bonnet, and doesn’t smell much in the boot. I have done all the obvious checks - fuel filler OK, all fuel lines are good etc, There are no visable fuel leaks / drips etc, so I think it’s a venting issue.

I popped into C&C Sparks ( MX5 specialist ) and Colin suggested removing the tank cover behind the seats to look for leaks. I did this - no leaks. I suspected the ‘fuel vapour filter’ was the problem, so removed & blew some pressure ( breath ) through it, and cleaned with Carb cleaner. I though this had solved the issue, but it doesn’t seem to have done. The charcoal can under the bonnet hasn’t been deleted, and looks in good shape ( it’s a 35K mile car, despite being 19 years old ).

Thanks in advance for your collective wisdom!

Do you get it with the roof up or down?

Roof down. I have never driven it with the roof up, apart from when I picked it up and came with a hardtop, which I soon ‘deleted’ !

Sounds too simple but make sure that the fuel cap seal is in good condition (making a good seal) and that the cap it tight. I’ve heard of this being an issue in the past, especially with chrome filler flaps fitted where it’s more difficult to get a good perch on the cap to tighten it. The fuel smell is drawn in by the void created behind the windscreen.

Seemed OK at a quick glance, but I’ll have a proper look next time I take a drive. Thanks.

Possibly an injector sticking open or just overfueling.

Had similar experience some time ago with my NBFL. Found I had not tightened the filler cap until it ‘clicks’. Problem solved.

I’m going to be very embarrassed that I took the car half to bits if it turns out to be a loose filler cap :see_no_evil:

I’ll be having a very close look at the cap next time I visit my Mazda, thanks.

Does not really matter.
Safety first all day long.
Anyway…acutely intelligent folks often don’t have a lot of time for the obvious!

Having driven it a few times now, I think the problem WAS the fuel cap! I wasn’t turning it till it clicked. It was a bit smelly in the cabin today, after sitting in the sun with the top up. But driving top-down, it doesn’t smell at all. Rooky error - thanks for the advice. Pic was taken at Leith Hill, where there are some lovely roads, as well as lovely walks.
