- My model of MX-5 is:1.8i
- I’m based near: Northamptonshire
- I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: fuel problem:
So had the car for a couple of weeks now, ran it till the the tank was a little too empty i think as before i filled her up i started losing power in every gear, getting revs, all be it spluttery but no speed, in fact, got increasingly slower as i limped it to the garage filled her up but i suspect the damage was already done as she didn’t improve as i drove her home, i think what has happened is that i have pulled up some gunk from the bottom of the tank and blocked the injectors? Or fuel pump?
Any suggestions welcome. I have seen injector reverb kits is that worth a go? Looks like removing the fuel rail and injectors is quite straight forward. Or just take it to a garage?
Fuel filter blocked? There is info on this forum about changing the filter, use the search facility.
You don’t say which model (NB , NC) you have ( 1. My model of MX-5 is:1.8i).
Sorry it’s a 1995 na
Is it worth putting a bottle of Cataclean through? As the car is of some age, it may be worth doing anyway.
Not something I have any experience of, but it might help.
I think I’d be tempted to change the fuel filter if you don’t know when it was last changed and go from there.
When I bought our MX5 I put some Bg44k Platinum fuel system cleaner in the first tank of fuel as I’d read good reports about its cleaning properties.
Probably fuel pump, however would be worth looking at hiw old your fuel filter is first as thats the cheap option!
Yes well I think I’ll remove the fuel pump first but how would I know if it’s faulty? The car will tick over its when you put your foot on the throttle reasonably quickly that it just dies
I will change the fuel filter as a matter of course I think as it’s not expensive, I actually thought it would be the injectors (I’ve bought a refurb kit that contains replacement gauze filter and o rings)
Thanks
It’s not HT leads is it? Your symptoms are similar.
Thanks, after a little research it could be the coil pack, and maybe the short ht lead, I’ve ordered the coil pack so we’ll see how that goes
I’d have gone HT leads first…
Think I should replace em anyway? ?
Which? If you’ve ordered a coil pack try that first, but from experience HT leads give more trouble on an NA.
I’d agree with Robbie. My NA had been neglected by owners past. I mentioned in another post the first thing I had to change was the clutch slave. Number 2 was the HT leads as mine had the same symptoms as yours (don’t replace it if it ain’t broke so try the leads first) and I did the plugs at the same time (very gently. As I’m not sure they’d ever been out before) and then (3) the radiator which was about to split. 4 was a rear caliper which seized which in turn cooked the wheel bearing which was number 5 to fix.
6 The dampers were worn and failed and boy she was bouncy (never brake in a car without dampers - poo is coming out as Clarkson would say) but I got cheap ones while I fixed everything else. They are still on the car now.
You’ll may then want to peak down the back of the block and have a think about the cam angle sensor seal otherwise it’ll pee oil over the heater pipes and rot them. That’s a really cheap one.
After that and a bit of arch work mine was fit as a fiddle until I found the real rust……
HT leads it was👍🏻
Thanks for confirming.
Spot on Rob
Thought I would share some pics of my car
That doesn’t look right why am I getting text and no images?
