Fuel system cleaner

  1. My model of MX-5 is: __nc2
  2. I’m based near: __chester
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: __fuel system cleaners

I got myself a late 2012 ('62 plate) NC2 towards the end of last year. It’s done 45k and came with lots of main dealer service history. There is an invoice from Sept 19 (mileage at 32700) and, amongst other tasks, it states ‘A fuel system cleaner has been added as part of the service; please fill your fuel tank immediately and use the full tank before refuelling’
Three years later - on another full service - the above was done again. (mileage 43100)
I am curious to know what stuff was used and why?
There are clearly numerous different products on the market, i.e. Forte, Wynn’s fuel system, Lucas Oil 10003 etc. If it is added again, any thoughts on which I should use would be appreciated. Thank you

It is called upselling, or sometimes known as profiteering.

About 5 or 6 years ago my 1993 Defender struggled to get through it’s MOT on emissions. After about 4 or 5 attempts they got it through. The following year I added a Wynn’s fuel system cleaner a few weeks before it went for it’s MOT and it sailed through with low emissions so now I put one in every year. They do work.

Ditto, I’m an incredible sceptic about all these additives, but my father-in-law (retired aircraft engineer) swore by premium fuel and an occasional additive (6 monthly, annually, depending on mileage). The improvement in fuel consumption and emissions is akin to snake oil to me, but does seem to work. I have had Mazda’s own fuel/induction system cleaner applied at services, and it does feel to have an impact - probably subjective, and each to their own……

It does work!

I had a VW Amarok that misfired when cold. The dealer diagnosed new injectors needed (£2000) Two tanks of max strength injector cleaner cured them and it did another 60k miles without a problem

The fact it works sometimes allows the overselling that Malc mentioned. It’s ’ I’ve Got nothing to lose’ ( except for a few quid) mentality that partly keeps them in business. If they were complete snake oil they wouldn’t still be around after decades in some cases.
New set of injectors sir? I’m deffo another sucker in this case😀

I am currently trying out Liqui Moly Injection cleaner in a couple of my cars. Will see what if anything happens.

Mine gets a dose of Seafoam on the run up to the MOT each year.

I used Forte fuel conditioner for years on my 1840 Mk1, it did sem to make the throttle snappier. Certainly, after it’s usual 3 turn morning fire up, it settled into a “non fluffy beat” much more quickly, However, applied to our 2002 Sport…no gains that I could tell. So perhaps the difference lies in a variety of usege areas, as the Mk1 was used rarerly, perhaps once weekly to keep the brakes shiny and battery toned up ,but the other one was a daily.

So, the first car ever made was…a Mazda MX5!
