my wife has just bought a very nice mk2 (W reg) MX5 and after reading all the positive comments on here we’d like to get a full geometry and alignment check/setup done on it. I’ve seen that Wheels In Motion gets rave reviews but as we’re based in Medway in Kent it’s a bit too far to go for us. Is there anywhere closer to us that people here have used and can recommend?
Thanks for that, not far away at all. I’ve had a quick look over their website and I couldn’t see any specific mention of geo setup, do you know what equipment they have for it, is it one of the proper laser alignment systems? Also if you don’t mind me asking, how much have they quoted for the job?
they subcontract to a local guy who has the best kit give kieran a ring and ask him he has done sillss and loads on my mx and several other bits for my son and friends great guy!
Thanks for that, the car is with Freelance Mazda today for a full service and cambelt change so assuming that all goes ok I’ll give him a call soon and book it in. Any chance you could post up your experience when you get yours done or email?
I wouldn’t be misled by the phrase “laser alignment”. Even simple, basic front wheel toe-in adjustment machines often use lasers nowadays.
A much more useful guide is to check the availability of a computer-generated printout of the “before” and “after” settings. If this is not available or does not clearly and specifically show the precise measured angles (toe-in and camber) of all four wheels - as well as the recommended settings, together with the allowable tolerances - I would be very suspicious as to whether it really was a competent four-wheel alignment which had been carried out.
In fact a proper four-wheel alignment check should also be capable of calculating and showing the thrust angle of the rear wheels (if it is a rear-wheel-drive car) and other secondary angles such as the front wheel castor angles. Even if these figures do not necessarily mean much to the average owner, they would enable an expert to check whether everything was all as it should be.
