Gaz gold pro coilovers knocking

Hi,

Hoping to get a little advice, I recently fitted a set of gaz gold pro coilovers to my mx5 mk1 eunos '93 using the original top mounts. I have adjusted the damping and played about with the ride height and each time I drive it there is a loud knocking sound coming from the rears. It knocks very slightly on the front but the rears are definitely worse. The car drives fine and handles nicely, no lurching or heart stopping moments but the knocking is quite alarming. I’m not sure what springs are fitted as they are second hand. No leaks or anything apparent. I noticed there aren’t any helper springs with mine but dont see any on the pics for new gaz gold pros on online shops either.

All bolts are tight and cant see anything obvious, any help would be greatly appreciated

Which bumpstops are fitted?

Have a good look at the bottom bushes. They have a very thin amount of rubber between the inner and outer casings and as a result don’t last very long. Cheap to buy though so well worth changing anyway.

I originally had the little bump stops that came with the gaz coilovers fitted but just changed one rear corner to the original mk1 bump stop to test and bounced the back end and it still knocked.

Do you mean the bush in the bottom of the shock?

Had to ask, because there are some people who wouldn’t have fitted bumpstops at all.

Early Gaz shocks didn’t have enough thread at the top of the rod, leading to knocking between the top nut and the top mount; the solution was to fit a large washer.

Have you tried raising the height of the car, or check that the top of the drop link isn’t catching anything?

Turns out it was due to the threads not being long enough. Put a couple of washers under the nut tightened it up and no more knocking

Thanks for all the suggestions
