Gearbox/Diff washers

Hi there -

I’ll be changing the gearbox and diff oil on my 2007 mk3 1.8 soon, and have a couple of questions

  1. I’m sure I’ve read somewhere that the filler and drain plugs on the gearbox and diff each have a washer, and its simply an extra 4 washers that are the same as the sump drain plug - is this the case?

  2. Anyone have the torque figures for the filler and drain plugs?

  3. Anything I need to know about what oil to use?

many thanks - Richard

The diff has a copper washer for the filler plugs and a silver washer for the drain plug. These are the same size as the drain plug washer for the gearbox. There is no filler plug washer for the gear box (the 6 speed does, the washers for the 6 speed are a different part number to those for the 5 speed). The washers are bigger than the engine oil drain plug washer. Not got torque figures off the top of my head, I think they are 48 Nm but I need to confirm. I’d use 75w90 GL5 spec oil for both.

Thanks for that Robbie, managed to find them on MX5parts web site although they only seem to show one part number for all the diff and gbox washers. I’l get some then should be able to get copper washers of the same size if needed.

I wouldn’t be too worried about it, just use the ones from MX-5 Parts if that’s what you have.
