anyone know the size of the aluminium crush washer, dealer is useless and I’ve found some on ebay but need to know the corrcet size please
Gary
I Just took the old one into my motor factors, they normally have a magic box full of then
Sometimes copper ones are easier to get hold of
The washers are Mazda part number 9956-41-800, they come in packs of 5 and the last ones I purchase cost me £3. They measure
18.25mm id
24mm od
1.43mm thick [new thickness, the washer is aluminium and is designed to crush when the correct torque is applied].
Torque should be:
22-30ft/lb for the engine sump
29-43 lb/ft for the gearbox drain, 18-29ft/lb for the filler
29-40ft/lb for the diff drain and filler/level plug
Spanner sizes needed
Engine sump 19mm
5 speed gearbox drain 24mm, fill/level 14mm open ended spanner, or 16mm bi-hexagonal ring spanner
6 speed gearbox drain 24mm and filler 24mm
Diff drain 24mm, fill/level 23mm
HTH
spot on for the sizes, drain is 24mm and so is filler. had to remove two floor trays to get to the bolts. mk 2.5. may be different to others. will try for washer tomorrow.
thanks
Is your car a 6 speed gearbox? ISTR that the size of the filler was different on those, let me know and I’ll amend the post
yep it’s a six speed box. But the sizes you quoted are accurate, same washer on drain and fill plugs.
good news on the washer, Mazda - hopeless, Halfords and motor factor - not much better. Toyota dealer - fantastic, two washers from parts bay, 50p in charity box.
could still do with correct torque figures if you have them.
Thanks, Gary
I don’t have the torque figs for the 6 speed box, but use the same figure as for the drain
Agree with sizes, I have just bought some from mx5parts, 15p each, they are the same size as the sump plug washers for a Mk1.

Geoff: What’s the URL on mx5parts? I can’t find the washers on there… (mk 2.5 6 speed) Thanks.
grumpy2: I just removed the cover in the front, although I had to take the first 2 screws off the one at the back to slide it past. Annoying design. Also those 2 screws look pretty fat and like they’re holding something important – but the car didn’t fall to pieces so i guess it’s ok.
Mk.1 sump plug washer is part no. SI 2179 on MX5 parts £0.34 each. If you put the part no. in the quick search it takes you straight to it! Just spent ten minutes finding out what URL means!! Learning all the time as Benny Hill used to say.
