Hi all
Just discovered after putting up with fume smell in car for a while (2008 mk3 2.0l), that the gearbox gaiter has a split in it, so that’s hopefully the cause. I’ve ordered a replacement, but before I do anything stupid, can anyone point me in the direction of a fitting guide please?
Many thanks in advance…

Are you talking about the cosmetic leather one, or the rubber one underneath.
When i changed my turret oil I noticed that my rubber one had a split, so I put a puncture patch over it.
I’m pretty sure that it was only held in with 3 screws and I did consider maybe changing it instead.

No, the rubber gaiter. i did consider a repair but thought it’s worth doing properly.

Removing the upper console is the hardest part.
Pop out the little coin tray thing at the front to reveal two screws.
Remove the rear cover behind the handbrake lever (directly below the centre cubby).
This may break some clips though, it did on mine and i’ve heard others say the same.
Remove a few screws from under there, unscerw the gear knob, and the centre console will lift off.
The wire for the window switches is a bit fiddly.
The rubber boot on the 6 speed is held down with 4 screws/bolts. (not sure about the 5 speed)
You wouldn’t know that mine had two broken clips on the rear cover, and I guess it’s now easier to remove.

Thanks for that. Already done though- Had the insides out loads of times for different jobs.
Can anyone also suggest a suitable grease for the gear lever base?

As a matter of interest, does anyone know the difference between white lithium grease and brown/black?
Thanks again
