Geometry check

I writing on behalf of a work colleague who is having handling issues with his MX5 (2006) model. I recommended a full geometry check. I’ve used wheels in motion ( Chesham) with excellent results however as he is Kent based are there any recommendations in that area ?

Any decent tyre shop that has a Hunter (or equally sophisticated ) alignment set-up can do exactly the same as WIM. People get a bit focused on certain businesses when you don’t need to overthink things.

Not strictly true.

Yes anyone can look up a setting and apply it but what an MX5 specialist can do is tailor the settings for what an individual is looking for.

Most specialist will spend some time talking to an owner to find out how they use their cars and what sort of balance and feel they are looking for. Interpreting this feedback and dialling in a setting to suit is a commodity that is worth seeking out and paying a premium for.

Life is not just black and white.

Yep, I can understand your argument/observations…but it’s also called over-egging the omelet. All this ‘fast road settings’ is fine, but the vast majority of drivers wouldn’t know the difference if it smacked them in the face.

  1. decent/good tyres?
  2. tyre pressure check
if the first two are satisfied then look at geometry check, suspension etc etc

As above really. Good quality tyres no more that 5 years old and perfect pressures will help the most. Alignment is for fine tuning.
That said, I should think others will agree, that the mk3 does not have great handling until it is lowered.
An alignment on a standard height car can be done at any decent alignment centre, just stay away from places like kwik fit, halfords and formula one. But if the car is lowered ,most alignment places will not have a clue, so then WIM or other mx5 specialized centres are your only option .

my nc (although its a 2010 sport tech) is stock suspension-wise and handles perfectly both on and off track.

Yes the 2010 is manufactured lower in stance than 2005-2006 mk3 so will handle better

I get my tyres from ATS Euromaster - take the insurance on them which is really worth it - 1 puncture and it’s paid for itself, also gives you free roadside assistance - used it once as I’d a flat and couldn’t get the wheel nuts undone - but one of the guys in my ATS has an MX5 so he could do the tracking and geometry well.
