Cyclist with three world titles beats F1 driver with five world titles. Can’t help wondering if it’s Anglo-Saxon bias of the voting public.
At least Billy Monger got the Helen Rollason award. He’s been through a lot and come out fighting. One of the nicest likeable young men too. Well deserved.
Bit of a lazy comment. Geraint is a Celtic name, not Anglo Saxon. Hamilton came second, Kane (who at one time looked and sounded like a 1940s spiv) came third.
Did they ever rescind Pistorius’ award? I think Monger’s award was pre-announced. Had some challenges, sure, but I note some previous award winners had to die to get that.
In the end, in a year’s time, this will be a pub quiz question that people will struggle to answer.
The short list were all worthy in their own fields. Not sure I agree with the limited ‘on-the-night’ vote where the winner is dependent on who happens to be watching.
If you follow cycling you probably know that Thomas is one of the riders that journalists go to when they want an interesting comment. It might be a thoughtful insight, it might be a wisecrack, but Geraint Thomas is always genuine and captivating. Just because he ‘stood on stage not knowing what to say’ for the amusement of SPOTY viewers is no reason to dismiss him as a worthy winner.
Cyclist beats 4 times TDF winner who is also his team mate to beat spoilt brat F1 driver who is in the best car on the grid and pretty much only has to turn up to win, blames everyone else when he doesn’t win and lives in Monaco so he doesn’t have to pay tax.
So - presumably you believe Vettel is a perfect angel?
Lewis get’s dissapointed when the team let’s him down, but he’s unable to comment, you don’t kick the source of the gravy in the teeth.- Would you? Name any driver in the current fold, who do you think is a perfect gentleman? Do they win races? Like football, Gentlemen do not win football matches or footraces either.
Lewis displays his true value in that vein,on the track - ever see him knock someone off? He’s one of the cleanest drivers ever in F1, almost equal to the late (and sorely missed) Jim Grant.
And he spends a lot of his spare time undertaking charitable work. I think he’s basically a decent guy, doing his best to act within his faith. I suspect where he will be different from other past racing drivers, is that when he is done with F1, he will just walk away from it, and pursue his other interests.
When Lewis crosses the line in first place he thanks the team every time without fail. By the time the second placed driver crosses the line he has usually also thanked everyone back at the factory and told them all he couldn’t have done it without them. He also regularly visits the factory to meet everyone involved. They win or lose as a team. If the team screw up and lose him places or races it’s understandable that his radio messages sound a bit annoyed.
Don’t forget that his dad took extra jobs to get the money together to take him karting. Not like a certain other driver who’s multimillionaire father bought him a seat. Not a great seat so now he’s bought him a team. Doubt if he will be much better there. You can’t buy talent.
Quite a few sportsmen and businessmen live in Monaco and other tax havens. Yes it’s mainly to minimise the tax they pay. If anyone who criticises them has ever put money in an ISA or brought home duty free tobacco, alcohol or perfume after a holiday then those are just other ways of legally and legitimately minimising tax paid.
