GET YOUR FLIPPING ROOF DOWN!!!

We’ve had gorgeous weather for weeks now, so how comes I’m still seeing more convertibles with their roofs up than down?!

A minor niggle I know but for some reason it really irritates me - whats the point of having the thing if you are not going to use it properly!! I’m even seeing lots of 5s with their roofs up! WHY?!?!?!

Maybe I’m biased - coming up for a years ownership now and not had a month without the roof down - if its dry, its down!

Rant over :-p

I used to be like you, never understanding why you would have a convertible and not have the roof down, but over the years I’ve mellowed, cars are mostly for getting from A to B for most people, and if it makes it a nicer experience with the roof up for some, even on a sunny day, so be it, live and let live, not something i would rant about, its all about personal choice. I save the rants for the important stuff like potholes, roadworks and bad driving… Wink

Personal choice at the end of the day. You have no idea how long their journey is likely to be, if they are feeling unwell or dressed perhaps for a wedding, so as Martin says live and let live.

Being a Libran, I can see both sides of this argument.  Live and let live sure - but why DO people buy topless cars and drive around with the roof up in lovely weather like we have been enjoying recently ?

Answers on a postcard please…

was only a light hearted “jokey” rant.

But it shouldn’t be allowed :-p

I’ll save the stamp and the postcard;

because it can be too hot, because they save the roof down experience for a leisurely drive in the countryside and not for the grind of the daily commute, I could go on…

Wendy loves going topless in the ND!

I had my top up yesterday (sunny day) - my excuse - 2 mile drive to park in a public carpark  whilst shopping - then 2 miles back.  For that it just didn’t seem worth it,  Sorry!

PS: I’m a Libran also!

TMW, if you see someone driving a Ferrari, Lambo or other supercar do you rant at them for not driving them properly? After all, why buy a supercar if you’re not going to drive it at 150mph at every opportunity…?

Obviously not, because that is illegal.

For what I intended on being a light hearted post, that seems quite a leap to make.

I must put my hand up as being guilty of driving my MX with the roof up Monday, Tuesday, Thursday & Friday evenings on my drive to the Gym, it’s a very short trip of about 2 miles each way & i can’t/won’t leave the roof down when it’s parked up in the dusty gravel car park at the gym, yes i could walk/jog or cycle there but then i wouldn’t get to drive the MX!

For journeys longer than that the roof will be down but for very short runs it stays up, i don’t want to wear out the motors!

A light hearted post that you started by shouting in the subject line. Ho hum…

I was hoping that the sub heading would give it the context of being said in a windy top down car - I’m genuinely not in the market for starting posts with the inference that I would be shouting profanities at people, especially not dictating to or offending people.

In hindsight, I guess that didn’t work but either way yes it was intended to be light hearted. Perhaps I shan’t attempt humor / joviality or the like online in the future.

Or perhaps I should just have kept my roof up, wouldn’t have had to shout then… :-p

wow this has all got slightly out of hand for what was obviously a bit of fun!!

I also make the comment ‘what’s the point’ when I see any convertible driving with the roof up on a gorgeous day.  But as many have posted there are various reason why this can happen,

  1. Mess your hair up

  2. Only a short trip

  3. Too hot don’t want to get burned - put aircon on

  4. Roof broken

  5. Heading for the M-Way

I could go on, but also I don’t subscribe to any of the above so my roof is pretty much always down

All down to the hot weather

I only drive in the dry so the top is down 95% of the time but does anyone else get to the point where they think flippin’ heck it’s hot and start needing a bit of shade?

Oh yes!  I’ve had sun/heat stroke and it’s no fun whatsoever!

Certainly do, unusual in the UK i know, my wife suggested i buy a wig to shade my head & also so i could feel the wind in my hair!

My wife and I had our first MX-5 back in 2011 (it was her company car).  We only had it for three weeks, when we took it to the south of France on holiday.  Top down all the way, even on the French motorways - a real blast at 130 kph !  The trouble was, I neglected to put sun cream on, and spent the whole holiday with a bright red, sunburnt nose !

Happy days !
