After fitting a K&N induction kit and a cat bypass pipe to myMk 1 I am now looking to get it onto a rolling road for a tune up as my mechanic noticed that the engine was running a little ‘rich’. Can anyone recomend a decent place in the North London/Essex/Herts area?
You would be better off investing a few bob in a diagnostic tool to see what your fault codes are. There is nothing tuneable on any of the cars fitted with a stock ecu.
Thanks all for the replies but what I’m after is increasing the BHP and after a little research online I’m guessing I have to invest in a ‘chipped’ ECU, can anyone recommend a company?
I’m not convinced you’ll see much bang for your quid unless you do something a bit more radical (forced induction) - Mazda’s engineers did a pretty good job of squeezing as much power as they could out of the standard engine.
But you might like to contact someone like Skuzzle Motorsport for advice on how to get rid of some cash.
You can’t chip a 5 like a Scooby. All you can do is ensure all the standard service items are 100%, perhaps decat if pre 1993, and experiment with exhausts & induction but bear in mind fitting a cone or similar adjacent to the manifold heatshield will sound great, but just suck in super heated air so you may gain a tiny bit at the top end but you will sacrifice mid range pull.
You could go Megasquirt ECU but it’s pointless unless it’s in conjunction with an FI instsallation.
As Scottishfiver says. Save your money for a turbo or supercharger. You can’t get any “REAL” gains in a normally aspirated '5 without spending very big bucks. You can spend a few 100 quid on a snazzy manifold and a fancy induction system, but the gains are barely measurable on a dyno, maybe 5 bhp.
These show gains of 15HP at the rear axle which is extremely good for £180!
You will also notice that the rich fuelling has significantly changed on the airflow modification that is carried out giving a much flatter AFR curve (1.6 only).
If you wanted to spend a little more a megasquirt PNP from the same company or any other source will net you 20-25 hp at the rear axle if properly tuned and allow future upgrades to supercharge/turbo.
So, yes the MX5 Mk1 is quite tuneable without lots being spent.
