Hoping someone can help, I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: I have a MK3 NC1 with a mohair roof, the area above the front locking bar has developed some stains, on close inspection they seem to be from some sort of glue like substance, the marks are only in this one area see photo’s the close ups are of the substance coming up through the mohair weave.
Any idea what it is and is there any way of getting rid of it? Thanks
Correct, it’s glue. Unfortunately on a few early production units the wrong glue was used to attach the material to the front header rail. Over a period of time this has leaked through the rubber (and probably damaged the rubber) inter layer and appeared on the woven surface material.
This was a common problem in the USA sunbelt where high temperatures and constant sunshine accelerated the process and has now been seen on some early UK vehicles for the last few years.
Mazda did, in the early days, recall and replace the hoods but I suspect that now they will not be so generous…
Sorry, but there is no cure, either learn to live with the problem or get a new hood fitted.
Same issue on my NC1 2006. I cleaned the roof and re coloured it with a black mohair restorer and it’s 90% better but the outline remains. Mazda would not entertain this on a 2006 car. I tried
Interesting that the Colour Restore didn’t make things worse, the same may be true for the beading treatments but I was loath to suggest this without trying. There were no easy solutions for the USA cars and there were plenty of them. But the problem appeared pretty quickly and well within the warranty period. If the material is still OK then I would leave it or maybe try the Colour Restorer bit be aware that it will not solve the inherent problem.
Hi Guy’s, thanks for all the help & info, I’ve been looking at US MX sites and their solution is " Goo Gone " spray so have ordered one, will let you know the results.
