Goodyear Asym 6

  1. My model of MX-5 is: NC1 2.0 PRHT

Has anyone tried the Goodyear Asymmetric 6s yet? I have 5s on my car now, but plan to have new rubber on before the summer and might go for the 6s. They seem to get good reviews.

I would plan on running 205/45/17 V; but a question for you beautiful, knowledgeable people out there…

The tyre comes in various speed rating - V is adequate for the MX5, but W and Y are rated faster and appear identical in price, road noise, grip levels etc - so is there a downside to going for a W rated as opposed to a V rated? Or indeed is there an upside? Just hypothetically, if say the retailer had Ws in stock - should I ask to order in a V?

Whilst not familiar with that particular tyre, I can’t think of any reason not to get the higher rated tyre for the same money…

I’m on assy5’s as well, and personally, given they’re going on an mx5 (which is very light compared to most cars today) I would look at the load rating more than the speed rating, as a higher load rating usually has a stiffer sidewall, something that may not be desirable as it affects the primary ride quality so much. Think run flats.

After a bit of googling, the faster ratings do run stiffer (at the same load rating) than the lower rated tyres.

This means more noise, vibration and harshness; and a more sporty feel due to less flex.

Personally, I think I’ll seek the V rated (149mph) tyres. NVH is a pet hate of mine, and my car is a toy, not a track weapon.
