Trouble is, the algae keeps coming back. Ideally a more permanent solution (pardon the pun), is needed. I also added Milton sterilizing fluid to the mix to try and keep it at bay.
I’ve used the Autoglym kit a couple of times and am pleased with the result.
However the waterproofing does wash/wear off so periodic re treatment is required. Looks like I’ve got another treatment left in the kit so it will clean & re proof a mohair hood 3 times.
There’s lots of different things you could try, if it was me I would use G101 cleaner first to clean the algae of and then fabsil gold to waterproof it afterwards
Have read various reports on the best way but here’s what I did … and it worked most excellently.
get a bucket, 1/2 fill with warm water - drop in a Milton baby bottle sterilizing tablet … wait for it to dissolve … get a nice soft brush ( I bought a cheap 39p hand scrubber from Wilko ) and then soak and lightly scrub the roof with said solution - until the whole roof is done - and well wetted - leave for a while ( I washed the rest of the car at this point ) - then rinse off with clean water. Get some Johnsons Baby Bath ( the blue bottle ) and put a couple of capfuls in 1/2 bucket of warm water … soft brush or sponge - give the hood a really good rub over with VERY foamy bucket contents … then rinse again with hose ( making sure the water isn’t running into the car Wink ) … you can now use a microfibre cloth to soak up the excess water and leave to dry - or as I did, get you 1L ( £6.99 from the camping shop ) Nikwax fabric waterproofer and soak the hood - brush in with hands, or big paint brush … leave to dry …
I followed the above and went from a tatty green hood to one that looks like brand new - all clean and black, and waterproof.
Total cost about a tenner - including the Nicwax ( and I have loads left of the wax, Milton and baby bath !)
What do you recommend for re-blacking the roof - mine has some marks, looks like the glue from underneath where the panel attaches that could do with a dye to hide ?
I notice many people recommending products like Fabsil or Nikwax to seal or reproof the hood. These products are completely unnecessary for modern mohair hoods, which are guaranteed 100% waterproof . Save them for camping equipment.
Had the very same problem a few years ago when I purchased a Mk 3 Sport. I solved it with a three stage Renovo kit ( clean, paint, seal) paying particular attention around the doors and where the hood meets the body at the rear, came up like new. Then always washed with Johnson’s Baby Shampoo which has a good safe Ph level. I don’t have a garage but a carport. Good luck
