Green Algae on Mohair Roof

Hi Guys.

Own a MK3 and have noticed around the bottom/back near the window ob the mohair roof, green stains are starting to appear.

Whats the best way to remove the marks and also to help stop the return of the marks.

The top was waterproofed in the summer.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks

Make up a solution of Johnsons Baby Bath and scrub the area with it with a toothbrush.
Rinse off.
All done.

Trouble is, the algae keeps coming back. Ideally a more permanent solution (pardon the pun), is needed. I also added Milton sterilizing fluid to the mix to try and keep it at bay.

I’ve used the Autoglym kit a couple of times and am pleased with the result.

However the waterproofing does wash/wear off so periodic re treatment is required. Looks like I’ve got another treatment left in the kit so it will clean & re proof a mohair hood 3 times.

Kits cost approx £20

I hope this helps.

Neil

There’s lots of different things you could try, if it was me I would use G101 cleaner first to clean the algae of and then fabsil gold to waterproof it afterwards

Have read various reports on the best way but here’s what I did … and it worked most excellently.

get a bucket, 1/2 fill with warm water - drop in a Milton baby bottle sterilizing tablet … wait for it to dissolve … get a nice soft brush ( I bought a cheap 39p hand scrubber from Wilko ) and then soak and lightly scrub the roof with said solution - until the whole roof is done - and well wetted - leave for a while ( I washed the rest of the car at this point ) - then rinse off with clean water. Get some Johnsons Baby Bath ( the blue bottle ) and put a couple of capfuls in 1/2 bucket of warm water … soft brush or sponge - give the hood a really good rub over with VERY foamy bucket contents … then rinse again with hose ( making sure the water isn’t running into the car Wink ) … you can now use a microfibre cloth to soak up the excess water and leave to dry - or as I did, get you 1L ( £6.99 from the camping shop ) Nikwax fabric waterproofer and soak the hood - brush in with hands, or big paint brush … leave to dry …

I followed the above and went from a tatty green hood to one that looks like brand new - all clean and black, and waterproof.

Total cost about a tenner - including the Nicwax ( and I have loads left of the wax, Milton and baby bath !)

Good mornings work that …

My method on my car and Clients’:

How to clean and seal a Mohair Hood

(ChrisRS Valeting & Detailing)

A nice sunny day and not too cold is essential to aid drying

Equipment:

Large car soft bristle wash brush

Nail brush

Wet & Dry Vac … set to wet

Dry vac

Bucket

1" NEW Detailing Sash Brush or 2" NEW Paintbrush

Container for the Sealant

MF cloth

Fabric/Convertible roof sealant…Renovo/Fabsil/ Similar products…Many to choose from

Method

In the bucket, mix a mixture, using around 100ml of each of the following:

Car shampoo

Milton Sterilising fluid, to kill Algae spores

Bilt Hamber Surfex APC

Warm water to 3" in the bucket

  1. Wash the roof in sections with the soft brush and then lightly with the nail brush to remove ingrained dirt. Do not apply any pressure

  2. Suck out the moisture with the Wet Vac

  3. Allow to dry for an hour in the sun

  4. Dry vac the roof and leave a little longer

When satisfied that the roof is dry…It doesn’t take long…That’s the nature of Mohair,

  1. Pour the sealant into container and apply section by section with a 1" Detailing brush

  2. Each section should be lightly wiped with the MF cloth after each section

  3. Wipe any Sealant off the glass immediately, or mask and cover the windows, prior to starting

Your Hood should now look brand new again!!

Don’t have a mohair roof … but that is very detailed and informative

We used a product called Wet and Forget, spray it on let it dry and next day all the algae had gone and it keep protected for up to a year…

What do you recommend for re-blacking the roof - mine has some marks, looks like the glue from underneath where the panel attaches that could do with a dye to hide ?

cheers

I notice many people recommending products like Fabsil or Nikwax to seal or reproof the hood. These products are completely unnecessary for modern mohair hoods, which are guaranteed 100% waterproof . Save them for camping equipment.

They are not unnecessary at all

The Outer layer NEEDS a rain/water repellent to prevent Mould and Algae from forming.

The inner layers prevent water ingress by nature of its construction

Go to your local pond and fish out a few water snails ,put them on your roof ,they love green algae !

Any idea how to remove snail trails from my Mohair roof?

Scissors!!!    Not helpful I know but my childish nature got the better of me.

Had the very same problem a few years ago when I purchased a Mk 3 Sport. I solved it with a three stage Renovo kit ( clean, paint, seal) paying particular attention around the doors and where the hood meets the body at the rear, came up like new. Then always washed with Johnson’s Baby Shampoo which has a good safe Ph level.  I don’t have a garage but a carport. Good luck
