hi forum members.i have used wonder wheels and auto Glyn mohair cleaner to clean off the green mould off my roof.not much luck.i am thinking of a new roof.any ideas before it comes to that? Colin.
Scrub with mixture of Johnsons Baby Shampoo with a dash of Milton to kill off algae. Worked for me.
hi.interesting.thanks for that.
Further to the above - I’ve used just baby shampoo with a soft shoe brush. Really work it into the fabric and it lifts the green right off. Thereafter I’ve used Fabsil Gold to re-proof the hood and that works wonders!
My daughter bought an Astra Cabrio last summer.
The roof was green, pretty much everywhere.
We ran a hose over it to saturate with water, then using washing up liquid and a nail brush each, set about scrubbing it.
It took less than 30 minutes to get 95% of the algae out.
Once it was dry, it showed up the areas we’d missed, so set about those areas.
Then a few days later we coated it in Fabsil.

However. I wrote a guide some time ago:
How to clean and seal a Mohair Hood
(ChrisRS Valeting & Detailing)
A nice sunny day and not too cold is essential to aid drying
Equipment:
Large car soft bristle wash brush
Nail brush
Wet & Dry Vac … set to wet
Dry vac
Bucket
1" NEW Detailing Sash Brush or 2" NEW Paintbrush
Container for the Sealant
MF cloth
Fabric/Convertible roof sealant…Renovo/Fabsil/ Similar products…Many to choose from
Method
In the bucket, mix a mixture, using around 100ml of each of the following:
Car shampoo
Milton Sterilising fluid, to kill Algae spores
Bilt Hamber Surfex APC or similar
Warm water to 3" in the bucket
-
Wash the roof in sections with the soft brush and then lightly with the nail brush to remove ingrained dirt. Do not apply any pressure
-
Suck out the moisture with the Wet Vac
-
Allow to dry for an hour in the sun
-
Dry vac the roof and leave a little longer
When satisfied that the roof is dry…It doesn’t take long…That’s the nature of Mohair,
-
Pour the sealant into container and apply section by section with a 1" Detailing brush
-
Each section should be lightly wiped with the MF cloth after each section
-
Wipe any Sealant off the glass immediately, or mask and cover the windows, prior to starting
Your Hood should now look brand new again!!
many thanks for all your help.
Use a jet wash, get up close and perosnal, May take a few attempts to get the bits you missed but it will work.
I totally disagree with this advice. Sorry
Colin - I’d follow the procedure recommended by Chris R as this is by far the best approach to get good results. It may take a bit more time but will be worth it.
thank everyone.yes I will follow the advice from Chris r.
