Hi Folks,
has anyone had a renewal from Greenflag recently? I’ve been with them for about 3 years and this year the cost has gone from £69 last year to £98 this year, almost a 50% rise. I rang and spoke to them and even the woman I spoke to was shocked. One of their FAQs says they give a discount if you don’t claim which I don’t think I’ve ever had.
Has anyone else had a similar experience?
Mike
I’ve had cover with the RAC for many years- my policy covers my wife and I, in any vehicle, and throughout the UK (GB & NI) and the Republic of Ireland.
Always thought it was fairly expensive, but I did a lot of miles when I was working, and thus I felt it was worth it.
I was on “auto-renew”….and just before it renewed I received the following by email;
‘…,…………Your new price will be £393.99 for 12 months. Your last total price for 12 months was £285.98………’
That’s a crazy increase- so I phoned to cancel my policy.
The operator agreed the increase was huge, and asked if I wanted him to “see what he could do”.
He immediately offered me renewal at slightly below last year’s figure.
I think the moral of the story is- never just “auto-renew”. Always phone and talk to someone.
If I hadn’t noticed the increase it would have been very easy to just let it roll on- and I guess that’s what they are banking on?

I used to pay £160-odd per year for RAC breakdown cover for my modern car. I didn’t auto renew, went through Compare the Market and bought a policy with LV Britannia for £37. This is with a £40 excess for each call out, although I haven’t had to call for help since owning a slightly clapped out Volvo 340 in the 1990s. It doesn’t cover cars over 15 years of age.
I guess I’ll have to shop around a bit…… thanks for that
Well, I get free RAC Breakdown cover through a current pension scheme.
When you actually look at it for European Breakdown it’s not great, (tyres, recovery etc).
So went for Greenflag.
Greenflag Europe actually offers fantastic cover (and a mate has used it twice when with him).
I paid £115 for the year and good value, communication and service in my opinion.
It’s the price of a tire perhaps and peace of mind for an excellent service….
I’ll see if I can find the hidden page but on the AA website there is a deal for a years worth of breakdown cover for £20, for the at home cover it was an extra £10. If I find it I’ll post the link but remember to untick the " auto renewal box "
I am with RAC thanks to pension, but AA quoted me £85 a year based on postcode, age and annual payment just now on this link, which is advertising a 50% discount until October 31st, so presumably normally £170 for the year.
Try AutoAid. They’re good and great value
Renewed with Green Flag in August. My wife and me both have personal cover in any car and my son just has his car. £78 all in. I think it depends on who you get on the phone as to what price you get.
Can’t find it unfortunately, it was on a deal that lasted for quite a while but hidden from general internet traffic.
Mine was personal cover but just the basic version (roadside and local recovery). As I don’t go far from home it is all I need. I did wonder if it was because the car I used to get the quote is a 31 year old Defender and they weren’t keen on covering it. As luck would have it my insurance ran out at the same time so I added breakdown cover to that for £20. I’ll sort something for the MX5 at a later date.
Surprised you paid £286 for breakdowncover!!
That makes 2 of us…… the joys of “auto-renew”
Beware
Yes, fair enough. We all live and learn. I insist they don’t auto renew, but saying that,I’ve still been with the same company for 5 years!
It’s easy to fall into the trap when you’re busy…
RAC £7 a month
Ive used Autoaid for years, covers any car you are in. You never know how good a breakdown service is until you have to use them.
Had experience during the summer. ( in a Fiat Punto) A complete failure during slow traffic on the middle lane of the M5 didnt even have hazard lights, had to push car into the hard shoulder,
The Autoaid was brilliant, thoroughly recommend them.
With Green Flag - I simply logged in online and stopped auto renewal.
After that I requested new cover to start on the date the old expired.
Within the Green Flag app it shows both Policies with the correct Start and Expiry dates.
