Grinding from rear brakes......

I replaced the rear calipers and pads a couple of hundered miles ago. All seemed fine at first but now I have a grinding noise (coming from the passenger side I think). I’ve gone back and checked the adjustment using the allen key etc as per Rob’s manual which all seems very easy and straight forward - but I still have the noise! It isnt evident when driving, only when braking. Its a Mk1

Suggestions please?

Is it all the time when braking, or is it (brake) temperature related?

Some performance pads will ‘grind’ when they are below their optimum temperature, but this should stop once they have a bit of heat - but they may never get enough heat if you are only driving in towns/cities.

I assume it is not rust building up on the disc (possibly the inside face)?

Rust might be a good call actually 01mx5. As the car only gets used at weekends - and then not even every w/e - there is quite a bit of rust on the discs (and that is the outside edge I can see). Also had an advisory when it went through the MOT last month for a pitted disc.

I’m thinking get those discs off and have a closer look.

I’ll let you know how I get on

If it is rust and you do not want to change the discs yet , try chamferring the edge of the pads this will reduce the contact with the rusty edge until the pads bed in properly.

This is common practice with all new pads at garages.

lol! Get this…

One of the pads was on the wrong way round, ie actual pad on the outside facing away from the disc - do you think this could be the cause of the noise??? Swapped it round and hey presto!

I remember the morning when we fitted them back in Jan, it was about -5 degrees and by the time we got to the pads (did whole caliper swap on both sides) clearly we were thinking about getting back in the warm and getting the kettle on.

Discs are a bit rusty so I will have a go at them another time.

Thanks for your help guys[:)]

WOW !

you are one lucky guy, if you had to use that car in an emergency stop the braking on one side only would have spun the car, advise getting the disc checked as was used for a couple of hundred miles metal to metal.

Have you checked the condition of the disc? I would expect it to be scored to hell.

A friend of mine was a mechenaic for a formula Ford team many years ago and this was done by mistake before a race , the car did half a lap and welded the pad to the disc . which then resulted in a spin and a totalled car. You are very lucky !
