Has anyone tried the halfords paint on calliper paint? I have my front calipers and carriers stripped down, wire brushed to remove all rust. Gave given them a spray with dinitrols rc900 rust converter. All seals have been removed, along with pistons, and bores and holes all plugged. Planning on brushing on upto 6 coats as recommended.
Wow, very pretty you two! Looks like the old Hermetite red engine enamel, very glossy and almost translucent, done a couple of engines with that, lovely. Where did you get the Mazda graphics?
I had read some very positive reviews on the Halford website, so decided to go for the brush on paint. TBH it’s quite brave of Halfords to allow people to leave reviews, as they seem to allow both the positive and negative reviews (I’m sure they remove the abusive ones).
Did you re-apply within the hour or leave to completely dry between coats? Also, how many coats did you apply?
Yellow on a black car should look good. I don’t like people who paint their Porsche calipers yellow, to replicate the Porsche carbon ceremic disks, but other cars look fine.
I’m doing mine red to match the car colour (classic red)
I did mine with Halfords red last summer - great results, just like the pics above. Time wise, I had it up on four axle stands, and by the time I’d got the last one finished, the first one was ready for another coat - I did four coats in total. A lot will depend on the air temp, but I’d read that the subsequent coats should be applied before the the paint has compleately dried - can’t remember if it says on the tin?
E-bay, from somewhere in America if my memory serves me correctly.
When painting, I worked round the car and by the time I had finished the fourth caliper and had a cuppa the first was ready for another coat. I think I applied a total of four coats.
Thanks Mister H I can see I’ll have to tidy mine up when the weather gets a bit warmer.
Did you do yours in situe or take them off? They look good so the method would be good to hear about.
I was thinking of brake cleaner then a wire brush, but don’t know if trhey need to be unbolted. The back ones are alloy, maybe do mine silver again as the car’s red, the fronts certainly need something.
…and what colour were Mk3 disc stone guards originally? Mine have been painted silver around the edges, were they black do you know?
as for recoating, that all depends on what colour you are using, i found that if you paint the carriers black the the calipers in colour it gives a better effect.
You will find it sooo much easier to take them off whether you just undo them or remove them completely, at the same time you can clean all the slidders and make sure the pads are free to move…
You can also paint the unswept area on the disc…stops that nasty looking rust…
as you can see the all one colour just doesn’t look as good.
I removed the carriers completely but left the actual calipers dangling on the brake hoses. Removing the calipers completely would make painting much easier but mean having to clamp the hoses and bleed the brakes on refitting.
Brake cleaner and wire brush was exactly what I did, and I used a fairly small paintbrush for accuracy. I still ended up with red hands and red spotted shirt and jeans, but that’s just me - I’m the same with superglue, sticking everything apart from the bits I’m trying to glue together.
I think the stone guards are just natural aluminium with no finish.
