Handbrake adjustment

Hi all, I need your help and wisdom again.

I was trying to adjust the handbrake on my 95 import Eunos and have come across a problem.  To cut a long story short the reason it isn’t working properly is that the actuating leaver on the left side seems to be sticking. When the handbrake is released the actuator does not return to the stop. On the right hand side if I remove the caliper and then take the spring off the actuating leaver it moves freely backwards and forwards with no resistance. On the left side after removing the caliper and spring I can feel it catching before reaching the home position. It will return home if pushed but it isn’t smooth. With the spring in place it goes back but I guess that’s to be expected. Problem is when it’s assembled on the car, and the brake adjustment procedure completed, if the handbrake is applied it sticks before reaching the home position so the brake sticks on. Looking at the picture below it looks as though this actuator should just pull out if it’s in the correct position, but although it moves up and down about 4mm it does not come out.

Does anyone know of a way to fix this or is it new caliper time?

I should add the calliper is only 2 years old and hasn’t done many miles.

Many thanks.

Not sure if this article will help or not

Hi Ray, thanks for the reply. I had read that thread, in fact that’s where I stole the picture in my original post from. I was hoping there might be an easy fix as I’m not sure a calliper rebuild is within my skill level.

A caliper rebuild should not be undertaken unless you have a pair of eyes there that has done it before and can guide you in the does and don’ts and also knows when to say the unit is not worth repairing.

There are rebuild kits available from the usual suspects.

http://fastcraft.biz/blog/?p=725     Does seem a bit labour intensive ! Autolink have them for £54 and claim they are genuine Mazda

Okay, looks like new caliper time.
I’ve removed the offending item and cleaned it but it’s still sticking. Although I was tempted to strip it down just to find out what is wrong, on reflection, I think life’s too short.
Euro Car Parts here I come.
Thanks all.
