What (If anything) should I be using to oil my handbrake cables?
I know that if a cables nylon lined you shouldn’t grease it because the nylon can swell causing the complete opposite of what you intended to happen… But are standard Mazda cables lined?
So, If it’s nylon lined, Do you lubricate them, If so, What grease/oil do you use?
Don’t know if this is everyones choice, but i have always used silcone lube spray, halfords own brand, which is also great for the windows, but a spray shops nightmare.
I was hoping that there might be some alternative options here because (As you said) getting silicone spray anywhere near a panel that might want painting (EVER IN THE BLEEDIN’ FUTURE !!!) is a real no no.
I’ve been there with my first Capri and it’s a sickening feeling when the paint you’ve just put on a panel starts to part like the red sea, All because some dozy git’s made the car look really shiny with a can of silicone polish in the past. In the end I near as dammit had to take the whole car back to bare metal, It changed a 2 day quick “blending in some repairs” respray into a week long epic slog (With me uttering profanity’s under my breath all the way).
Since I worked out what happened back then I haven’t even owned a can of the stuff (And don’t intend to change that now).
You will also find silicon grease for sale at DIY stores and builders merchants. It is used to lubricate the rubber seals in rainwater goods (guttering and drainpipes).
