Handbrake handle fitting NB

  1. My model of MX-5 is: __NB

I fitted a jassperformance handbrake lever and button. Not as easy and satisfying as it might be. Looks good though. I have a couple of questions at.the end.

But first up, getting the old one off. Button unscrews but you might need molegrips or similar to shift it. On the NB the handle has a notch along the inside of the hole running along the bottom, which aligns with the handbrake lever tube which is not round and has a gap. That means you cant twist it much to got it off. So a lot of jiggling and pulling required.

The jassperformance handle is held on by a grubscrew, which because of the gap on the lever, means the grubscrew cant be located underneath where it cant be seen. Other than that the new one goes on easily albeit with some slack. I had to wrap some tape in there to stop it wobbling.

Ok questions. The original handle has a step down in thickness at the end, which locates into the hard plastic shroud to the floor, it stops the.shroud rattling around. The jass handle does not, so then shroud is loose at the handle end. I’ll try shoving some padding down there in the gap, but anyone have an elegant solution? Maybe get a leatherette gaiter.

Second. The button. It is not a snug fit into the handle (Vlad?), so it too has some slack meaning it wobbles about quite a bit under the thumb. Not a very satisfying feel. Can’t think of an obvious solution to that. Anyone?

I drilled the top of a Yardley Lavender perfume bottle to make a cap for the gearstick gaitor on a Capri once.

Charlie perfume and Hugo Boss aftershave also come to mind but you’ll have to run in and out of superdrug with a micrometer to gauge the size you need and start haunting the toiletries aisle at Sainsburys.

If I start lurking in the toiletries section of Sainsboes I’ll get arrested again

Don’t tell them you’re looking to increase the girth of your knob! Seriously though, a flat elastic band should stop the wobble.

A more manly pursuit would be trawl the scrapyards and see if you can find a posh ready made solution for the gaitor.

My days of climbing towers of scrap cars with nowt but a swiss army knife and a grin are long gone.

The laggy band might work.
