Handbrake light on my nc2 started to misbehave

Hi, the handbrake light on my nc2 started to misbehave - note im not talking about the physical connection of the handbrake to the rear brake calipers. That works just fine. The handbrake light still works (light come on) when i pull the handbrake handle, but it also comes on when accelerating. I can’t hear anything loose inside bur i have a feeling its either something loose inside the switch or something needs adjusting.

Do we have instructions how to reach into the handbrake switch in order to adjust/replace?

Thanks

It’s not the easiest item to get to.
Located on the passenger side of the handbrake lever.

So i need to get the centre console out… well its a start i guess.

Handbrakes I know of switch to earth/chassis hence the one wire connection. Conventionally if the light wasnt coming on it would be a poor connection or bad switch, if the light is coming on without the handbrake up it could just be a sticky switch or something under your trim interfering with its operation. Either that or the circuit is somehow earthing itself out through water ingress or wire damage. Do you have a multimeter? You could check the resistance of the switch wire to the chassis with the handbrake up and down.

Make sure that your brake fluid level is on max.

Check the brake fluid level first

That’s interesting. Is the handbrake warning lamp used to indicate brake fluid level as well on these?

Re level, Isn’t the handbrake connected by a wire? its completely separate from the braking system

The puzzling thing its doing it when accelerating…( mostly from standstill). Accelerating while driving not so much

Yes, low fluid level and acceleration going round bends etc triggers the warning light if the fluid is low. It’s not got to drop much either from the max mark.

Btw the light I’m talking about is the red handbrake light. Not the yellow braking system light

Good to know. In that case ignore my advice, clearly there is more to the system than just the handbrake switch, otherwise it may have been the way to go :+1:

Sensor for low fluid also doubles up as the handbrake on (red) warning light in the cluster👍

Ah ok thanks for that. Currently at Heathrow so will check that first thing when back. Thanks all

Yep, as Mick says. The light is not just a warning light for the handbrake.

Common misunderstanding with the NC. I guess because people are so used to it only coming on for one reason :+1:

Not sure it’s a ‘common misunderstanding with the NC’. It’s a common misunderstanding full stop (and not reading the handbook).
All VW/Audi/BMWs - & NA/NBs I’ve owned for at least the past 20 years have this dual function warning light.

Well it was brake fluid level and it seems the leak is on the master cylinder. Anyone know what seal usually goes to buy one and get it changed?

Is it wet around that area? Could be a past leak causing the paint bubbling, the master cylinder looks fresh, maybe replaced in the past.
Check brake pad wear, that (low pad material) and leaks of course will cause the level to drop.
A quick search of popular parts supplier doesn’t throw up a seal for it.

It seems its the only place that there’s a leak as the paint has come off the firewall - I knew about it and was going to sort it in the winter. Brake fluid was recently replaced (using motul rf600). Last time i checked was early August but there was two trackdays and the Nurburgring trip but i check the race pads two weeks ago and its a bit more than halfway but still got some meat left in them.

It maybe a combination of the leak and pad wear. But i do need to sort that leak and re paint the firewall where the paint has lifted

So is the vacuum servo wet with brake fluid?

I must have had a dribble of fluid down the servo, well I guess it was as the paint had lifted. Nothing visible or wet was evident on there. So guessing it may have dribbled from maybe a previous topping up (not by me) it was certainly dry. I’ve since painted the area with black satin paint.

What I’m saying is has it come from the reservoir, leaking cap, especially on those track days?

not sure at the moment need to investigate further - at the moment during daylight I’m at work so its probably a weekend job.

thanks
