Hard top for NB? Likey or no likey?

Came across MX5 in Crete this Summer. Not sure if its ‘work in progress’ or the owner likes the grunge look. Not seen anything similar before and was curious to know how people react.

I’ve seen people do custom fibreglass work to get them to look like a Mazda Roadster Coupe Type S which I think is better than the convertible.

This is a bit too stylised for me, but you’ve got to appreciate the work :+1:

In principle, I like it. I prefer the look of my NC with its hardtop. Do you have a direct side shot? That would make or break it for me.

Nice find :+1:

It’s each to their own so this one’s not for me.
I do quite like the smoother coupe hard top that pops up occasionally and do like the idea of owning one alongside my soft too NB.

Thanks for sharing this.

Is that now a hatchback ?

I like it although it would look better painted.

Much prefer the practicality of a roadster, and that is too stylised and not racey enough to fit in the, Sebring, Lenham, WSM Sprite sort of mods from the 60’s. But each to their own obvs plenty of work has gone into it and the gaps are acceptible.

sorry no side vie w photos to share. The Mrs thought me a bit weird taking the photos I did… whilst on holiday with the kids !

Going to guess;

Thanks @ast :+1:

It looks better under paint but somehow still a bit clumsy to my eyes.

I’m confident many will like it though.

Thanks for sharing that link, some not bad examples on the fb page but they seem to make the MX-5 even more impracticle than it already is. Not something I’d ever consider but if are hard tops are float your boat …

I find this sort of customisation bizarre. You live on a hot island like Crete and decide you want a roof on your sports car…unless of course the roof is worn out ?

Dunno, I’ve driven a NA Miata in Missouri, and it was too hot to drive with the roof down.

I never brought a MX5 for wind in the hair experience.

Presumably there’s no access to the boot now?
I kind of like the look when it’s all finished and painted, but it must be a nightmare to reverse park.

I assumed it was a hatch back?

Yep, checked facebook; it is a hatchback

So, where does it hinge then?
With the rear section separate from the ‘targa’ section what does it hinge on?
Unless there’s a hidden roll bar or similar that the rear section is hinged on I can’t see how the whole back end could revolve upwards.
I’d be interested to see any shots of it open on FB as I don’t do that.

I hope these two caps show the story!

Indeed they do, thank you.
I was imagining the hinge would be off of the targa top area - the whole section - rather than the inner bit, but it all makes perfect sense now I’ve seen it.
It’s actually a pretty ingenious bit of work, I wonder how sturdy it is.
Be good to see one in the metal/plastic some time as I like the subtle arch extensions too, makes the car look like a mini Aston.
Thanks again for sharing.

Personally I’ve always loved the GT look, probably form years of ogling that class I. The endurance races down the years… Le Mans etc.
Early ones for me were the Marcos, various Lotuses (Loti?), MGBs, Ginettas and so on.
However, altho I love the original Audi TT for its purity of form (obvs drawn along the lines of the late 30s GP-winning Auto Unions), I’d want the ragtop as my daily driver.
The coupe would be good as my second ‘5’ tho…. :sunglasses:
As the others say, thank you for sharing the pics - it’s opened up a whole new arena of spending worms, I mean, opportunites!
