Hardtop strikers gap

  1. My model of MX-5 is: 1992 Euros roadster
  2. I’m based near: North Wales
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: Hardtop strikers gap. Unsure if it’s correct or adjustable.

Fitted my hardtop and cut out the plastic trim for the side striker plates to sit it. They are raised off the trim by quite a bit. They feel secure and I’ve adjusted all the latches to be slightly difficult to push down. Unsure if I’m missing something or if that’s how they’re meant to be. They’re on the correct sides, bought them off MX-5 city. Any advice would be great as it’s my first time fitting a hardtop, thank you.

You have been sold side plates for a late NB (NA01-R1-361J, NA01-R1-371J), when you needed the original part (NA02-R1-361D, NA02-R1-371D).

You can see the difference here:

You can see they are different shapes. If the hardtop came off a NA or early NB, you might need to update to the later side latch (you might have that already). Possibly the gap you are seeing is down to trim differences between the NA and NB. I would check carefully that the plates are fitted correctly; you used the cut out guides on a NA side trim, and they might not be the same as for NB.

Damn, that’ll be it. Annoying the strikers I bought are advertised for both MK1 and MK2 but my fault for not researching enough. I’ll pick up some MK1 strikers and see if they do the trick. I believe it’s a MK2 hardtop so I’ll see if I need to adjust the latches like you said. Thank you for help, I’ll update the thread when I get the new strikers for the benefit of anyone else in the future. Cheers.

The change came in 2003; so earlier NBs are ok. There are slight variations of the earlier type, but they are all compatible with each other.

Fitment with old style plates

New style plate, old latch

Pre-2003 latch (MY2003) Old style pointy cap

Left is old style, right is later style. Looks like they are interchangeable

But I think to fit the later part to an old catch, you need to file some metal

Jass seems to have both; these are pattern “improved” parts, not genuine
