I’ve tried searching online but can’t seem to find the answer I need.
When I bought my 5 last year it came with a hardtop. I used the hardtop last winter and the wind noise around the passenger window drove me nuts!! So getting it ready for this year I figured I’d try and sort it out.
Upon fitting it appears there’s a fitment issue on the passenger window rear seal. The driver side window seals nicely over the seal. When the door is closed and the window is up it sits about halfway over the rubber seal. The passenger side however just about touches the rubber allowing wind noise through when driving (it doesn’t let water in though) giving the impression that either the window needs to go back to meet the seal or the roof needs to come forward to meet the window.
However, the hardtop is pushed as far forward as can go and seals nicely against the windscreen frame and locks into all 4 latches nicely. Is it possible to adjust the window backwards? Or should I pack out the rail/rubber towards the window? Everything I’ve found online is for adjusting the window up or down to the top seal.
If anyone has any tips then it’d be greatly appreciated as at the moment it’s looking set to either drive me mad all winter again or get a good dose of gaffer tape to seal it shut for good.
Thanks for the link to the guide, using that I started completely from scratch adjusting all latches to suit which did make an improvement to the overall fit of the hard top but still didn’t completely fix the seal issue. (I’m hoping that now it’s set up it won’t need doing again?).
The final step was to remove the rubber seal and unscrew the metal channel it sits in and pack that out slightly (about 3mm) and re-fit it all, thus moving the seal further into the glass so that now it sits over the seal when closed. I also had to move the seal rail slightly in towards the car when refitting to prevent the window squashing into it not over it when the window is open and closed. Going forward I imagine either the seals have gone soft and replacements would be firmer or as this a hallow seal, make an opening at the bottom and feed a solid rubber insert into the hollow to stiffen things up.
Test driven and it’s the quietest drive with the hard top I’ve had. Theres still slight wind noise on the exterior due to the nature of how the hard tops appear to be designed with it protruding out behind the windows causing the air to hit it.
