Harsh shift in1st and reverse

Hi , since a few days i found it “harsh” to shift in 1st or rear gear (NC 2.0 2010 and especialy with cold engine) , i live in a hot climate and i believe the transmission oil has never been changed. The car has 160.000 kms now.

When was the clutch fluid last changed ?
Have you had a look for any fluid leak around the clutch slave cylinder ?

No leaks, clutch fluid has been changed about 90.000 kms ago.

Hmm, speculation. Was the brake fluid last changed 90k ago? They share the reservoir.

Both should have been done at the same time every two years, but clutch is often overlooked.

If the brake fluid level has dropped with pad wear, then it is possible the take off to the clutch (being higher) might occasionally draw in air/moisture when clutch and brakes are applied together. But the brake warning light should have lit before it drops this low.

When very hot (eg stuck in traffic) any hygroscopically trapped moisture and maybe a bit of the air expands a bit and the clutch bite point appears to rise, thus seeming to be OK, but still awful when cold.

It’s distinctly possible that, after 160,000k, you could well be in for a new clutch.

But try the fluid solutions first of course

Thanks all, will off course try the fluids ‘(and maybe the small reservoir under the shifter/middle console). I worn clutch should it not “slip” while accelarating?

Not always, but you’re not wrong, that is a common indicator.

I had a clutch which was worn almost through the rivets on the friction plates, but there was no hint of a problem from the drivers seat.

Thanks, will find out.
