Has anyone ever used slick 50.

Hi having just brought my first mk1 mx5 auto with nearly 100,000 on the clock,I felt it was time for a bit of a cost effective overhaul.

When I start her up she smokes for about 30 seconds, a friend of mine recomended slick 50 when I do the next oil change as this apparently helps the problem with older valves in the engine, coating the engine in a teflon type material which also helps reduces engine wear.

Has anyone used this product and if so which one would I need there are quite a few types to choose from on the market, and should I use a specific type of oil.

Thanks.

Have a read of this, particularly the blue high lighted portions, then make your own mind up.

G’day mate

Yep used it once in an old Furguson Tractor, did nothing for me or the engine! Then I found this article

make up your own mind. Re smoke at startup, if it’s a puff of blue smoke, it is almost certainly oil draining down the valve stems past worn seals. Not a cheap fix I’m afraid, the cylinder head has to come off and be stripped down.

I use Mobil 1 fully synthetic oil in 5W50 grade, might be worth trying some decent oil

Thanks for the rapid replies, I must say I was somwhat sceptical as to wether slick 50 would actually work.

The car is due an oil change so I will go with the fully synthetic 5w - 50 oil, new filter.

Looks like I will be replacing the valve seals pre mot.

 Hi 5,

You could try this,

Wynns oil treatment is very impressive, I have been to a wynns demo on the effectivness of the treatment. I haven’t tried this product though, but it may help, I would be interested in the outcome I you decide to try it.

IMHO, Wynns are about the only oil additive retailers who do a decent product. I often recommend the oil flush stuff, and used to use it when I was in the UK. This stuff I haven’t come across, but I doubt it will cause any harm, and may help

I did actually try that Wynns Stop Smoke product (in a try-anything-once attempt to reduce my engine’s oil consumption).  Didn’t make any difference at all.

Until I drained it out, I got 1 mpg worse fuel economy (it’s unbelievably thick).  Waste of money, in my experience.

Edit to add: I’m not down on Wynns - I’ve happily used their engine flush and HLA treatment, but that particular product didn’t do any good.

I have heard of good comments on a product from the US called RESTORE made by Ametech for older cars and by all the press reports seems to help with older cars but they recommend an engine flush first if the car is a high miler. Not used it myself but have a look at: http://www.americantechnology.co.uk/customer-testimonials-4-w.asp?gclid=CLH4q_2y8JkCFRUFZgodYg8QQg

Again, personal choice I guess but maybe spend 20-30 quid first to try something that appears to work by all accounts rather than whip off the head.

As an aside, I was told by my local Mazda dealers (and the head mechanic races them) that you should never run fully synthetic oil in the older MX5’s and nothing lower than 10w 40 as if you have worn valves/rings you will use more oil using a fully synthetic and much thinner oil. More so if you have any performance mods on. Again personal choice, I’m only repeating what I have been told.

I just noticed High 5’s car is an automatic.

If it’s making white smoke, check this thread:  http://www.mx5oc.co.uk/forum/forums/p/2754/13498.aspx
and this thread:  http://www.mx5oc.co.uk/forum/forums/p/1705/7060.aspx
and check the auto transmission fluid level.  A faulty vacuum modulator valve can let ATF be sucked up into the inlet manifold, making lots of white smoke.  Easy to fix.
