Has my timing belt been changed?

This is why I keep the old parts on my work bench until the customer has collected his/her car…….

If this is correct they want naming & shaming as this shows the trade in a bad light…

It’s nice you don’t make the customer take them away when they leave.

I know that some garages like to prove the old items were removed by forcing you to take them away with you, but then what are you supposed to do with a lot of old (potentially broken/unusable) parts !

Hi Rodders

In your expert opinion do you think the work has been done?

I don’t think it’s fair for me to comment without seeing the car, sorry

Fair enough. I understand.

You are not far from me, as a foot note I give everyone their proof back ,its your cr*p, you bin it ;0) and they get pictures for proof for future use if needed for themselves.

Mmm, fair enough, but wouldn’t evidence of this dust be enough to signify that the belt hasn’t been changed. I am sure that someone like Rodders or Mad Malc would have enough experience to tell whether the belt is new or has been changed. I personally don’t know what a timing belt kit includes but it possibly includes new idler pullies and pully tensioner springs or such like as well as the timing belt, all of which could be examined.

Put them in your bin.

Local council are somewhat against that (old house, different council, not an issue).

True, there’s a lot less rust spots on my new pulleys than my old ones

Quick update. Cam cover removed and inside was an old cam belt. Yep I was done over for over £400.

Hi Bally

I am not at the moment. I am going to give them chance to refund me, I will then be taking action against them.

This will involve trading standards, small claims court and the police, oh and Mazda UK.

I take it the mechanic who did the work isn’t an apprentice who could have confused an alternator belt with a timing belt, because the alternator belt looks alot newer than the timing belt.

Absolutely not there was no confusion.

I have all my evidence now. I am gonna take this as far as I can go.

I thought it unlikely, but I figured it was a potential possibility.
My other cars main mechanic can actually point at parts of my car and say which was a professional and which was an apprentice who did the work

We had a similar experience, paid £455 for work to be done, then the work was found to be incomplete and the problem persisted. The person tried again a further three times and returned our vehicle in a worse state than when they first got it - not happy and by now (this was over the course of four and a half years as they had to have it at their workshop each time) there’s nothing that can be done (they broke off all contact after claiming a friend of theirs would be in touch to do the work), so we lost our money.

One piece of advice is not to let it get to you, because I wouldn’t want anyone to go through the six months of stress I went through due to the above and other things all occuring close together which led me to hospital appointments which, eventually, they decided my symptoms were all caused by stress/anxiety

Just for reference … you can clearly see the satin finish on a new belt( taken from the NEC stand project roadster in march)
