Head Unit Swap

When I got my NC3.5 last year it already had the original head unit swapped out for a Kenwood one with DAB, reversing camera, steering wheel controls working etc… but it doesn’t have Apple CarPlay and when trying to use it to call/answer the phone whilst on the move is next to useless, so I’ve had on my list to get it swapped out for one that is CarPlay compatible.
I’m hoping that if I got another Kenwood it should be a case of a straight swap with the current one, so no need for a new wiring adapter or new facia plate and the existing camera would work…
Does anyone know if that would be the case….?

Pretty much a straight swap over I would think.
I’ve had three different head units in my current NC2, same facia kit used, same harness save for buying an additional cable because of the Bose set up. Maybe a patch lead for SW controls required but Kenwood to Kenwood shouldn’t require it.

Cheers Mick, I’m hoping that’s the case, I could just see it being one of things that should be straight forward but ends up being a pain in the backside…
Think I’ve got the instructions for the current Kenwood so I’ll check connection etc… :+1:

Also, when you say you had various head units swaps were they all the same make or different ones…??
If I don’t necessarily need to have another Kenwood it broadens the options for me.
I assumed there was a different facia and wiring harness needed depending on the make of head unit.
Sorry if these are silly questions, over 20 years since I last delved in to swapping head units about :face_exhaling:

Car came with a Sony HU, I swapped in my Kenwood from the NC1 as it was only 2 years old. Then I bought a Pioneer wireless HU to replace the Kenwood, sold that one.
Truth be told I reckon the Kenwood was the better unit, I rate them as the sound quality was definitely better.
As I said probably all you need is a patch lead for SW, try the one you already have fitted first.

Generally - if you stick to the mainstream manufacturers ( Pioneer, Kenwood, Sony, Panasonic, Alpine etc ) they will all fit in to the facia plates because they are a standard “double DIN” size.

Also - if it has an aftermarket unit in now - there is a very good chance the adaptor loom is already there that changes the cars METRA connector in to the industry standard ISO connectors.

Another mainstream manufacturers unit will normally arrive with ISO connectors.
