Heat shield query on new stainless steel cat back system

Hi folks,

I’ve just purchased the MX5 Parts single exit stainless steel exhaust for my 1992 UK spec MK1.

Having removed the existing parts, which were fitted about 5 years ago, I notice there’s a heat shield welded to the pipe, about 10 inches from the back of the cat, about 12 inches in length.

The stainless steel replacement has no such shield, so I’m just wondering what was being protected and whether I need to be concerned.

The aftermarket seem to dispense with the heat shields that Mazda fitted to the front pipe, cat and catback.

Not heard of any issues and these parts have been available and fitted for over 15 years now.
