Heated side mirrors

  1. My model of MX-5 is: __PRHT

I assume both the side mirrors are heated, but I can’t find any info in the hand book apart from details for the single fuse which is located on the drivers side apparently.

Are they ‘always on’ heated, or activated with the HRW?

My driver side appears to be working correctly, but the passenger mirror is not and remains frozen. Any thoughts what I might check? I confess I haven’t tried the mirror control yet to see whether there is power reaching the unit because it was dark.

Just looking for pointers from the big brains here hopefully.

Cheers!

I believe they are linked to the HRW but don’t quite me on that!

In terms of testing, definitely check there is power going to them.
Also, check that the wires that connect to the glass itself are connected. I had to replaced a smashed mirror when I had my NC and there are two wires with spade connectors that push onto prongs on the back of the mirror glass itself.

My handbook says the rear window demister when on also demists the side mirrors page 5-63 model NC 3.75👍

Thanks Mick, mine does too - didn’t think to check the HRW section (doh). The side mirrors on my MGTF are always on, but I guess that’s a throwback to when they didn’t have a HRW and the mirrors were even more vital (Rover never liked updating stuff if they could just reuse an old part lol).

Tomorrow I will check to see if the passenger mirror moves using the adjustment switch to see if there is power to it, then I’ll have a look at connections and report back.

OK I’ve checked the mirror for powered movement and that is fine, so there is a supply reaching the unit. How do I get inside to check connections?

I prised the mirror glass off my last NC drivers side mirror. It’s just clipped in if I remember correctly on a central pivot. It’s a bit daunting to do but it released. It was a little clicky in it’s movement, didn’t achieve much so put it back.
So you can have a look behind there for faulty contacts otherwise it’s the main connection loom in the door jamb.

Exactly what @MickAP said, this video might help as it is the same mechanism behind the mirror:
