Hello Everyone

Recently purchased a J plate from ebay - had it delivered last week (250 mile trip).  Currently sitting in my garage (the 5 not me) awaiting service, tax, insurance, sill. - Had one about 9 years ago and loved it
Car seems to run well, apart from being a little tappety when first started - this seems to disappear when warmed up - i’m hoping this is normal.
I’m looking to spend some time and a little money - or probably a lot of money - on getting her up to scratch - bodywork mainly i think, although it only appears to need a sill, boot respray and wing respray (the lacquer is bubbling off for some reason).
The drivers side wing mirror was held together with black insulating tape - i dismantled it and found that the bolt and springy thing were just floating around in the casing - sorted now though.
Question for the moment regarding the elec windows - action seems really slow going down and worse when going up - is this repairable with just a little tlc or does it need new motors?
Cheers guys

Hello and welcome!

The electric windows do get slow. My passenger side was terrible when I got mine. If you spray WD40 in the runners it helps a bit. It is better to take off the door card and use white lithium grease on the mechanisms and silicone spray on runners.

Hope that helps…

WOW! How quick was that.  Joined the forum and within 2 minutes of my first post 2 replies.

 Welcome
The tappety noise is probably the HLAs (hydraulic lash adjusters or just hydraulic lifters). They tend to get old oil in them and it doesn’t leak out and get replaced. It’s often worse in the cold. I don’t think it’s anything to really worry about as long as it goes away when warm, but the clatter can be annoying.
You can often temporarily cure it with an oil additive (some on here have used Wynn’s HLA with success I think), or when a cambelt change is due you can clean them. I used the guide here, it also describes the cause quite nicely.

Hi Blade,

WelcomeSmile

Yep as regard to the windows i had the same problem, even though a new driver side motor had been put in just before i bought the car, still a bit slow. So got myself to Halfords for some white lithium grease and some silicone grease too, removed door cards, sprayed white grease down both channels of window and silicone around sides and Bob who isn’t my uncle should have been as both windows now go up and down like the proverbial off a shovelSmile

One other thing and this might sound a bit silly. But i’ve found that if i have the engine off my windows are always slower but with the engine on it’s back to the lightning again he he!

Also, as with regards the tapping you get from cold start up, i get the same, though i rarely drive my 5 anyway, when i do start her up from cold i get a ticking type sound but after a good run it has disappeared so i’d go along with the HLA theory on that one i think.

Any questions just ask. You’re in good hands here as they say.

Cheers

Ben

Welcome, was going to post abou the issues but others have.

Both are normal problems/characteristics, both can be sorted out cheaply to a degree and completely less cheaply but nothing serious normally.

Enjoy.

greetings blade

i also get the tappety noise on start up from cold. had it since i bought the car 5 yrs back. no probs one the oil pressure does its thing.  [:)]

That’s because with the engine off, all the power to drive the window motors comes from the battery, and the voltage probably drops a bit under load. With the engine on, the power comes from the alternator and the motors run at full speed.

Hi Andy,

Found that When i was greasing my windows, after putting everything back was rolling the windows up and down for a while with ignition only, hence when i tried to start car battery was flat. Quick call to Mazda, got them out recharged battery and whoila! speedy windows with engine on he he

Cheers
