Oh dear, just bought a set of discs and pads from MX5parts, odds are I’ve got the wrong ones then Looks like I have 253mm Front, vented. 248mm rear.
Had another tinkle this PM, wanted to change all the discs and pads but, as I thought, the discs are the wrong size! Attempted rear near side first, and noticed the rubber boot I found in the boot was from the top slider on the caliper so it was pretty seized. Thought I’d see how easily the caliper and bracket bolts came undone and they all cracked easily which is a good sign. handbrake adjuster is new to me, still not quite sure how it works, I could do with a cutaway diagram of the caliper and adjuster. Had a look to see if I could spot the leak on the power steering pipes. I can see some damage, looks like the cooling pipe has been held with pliers and the hose part is pretty fragile. If I get chance, I’ll remove the front bumper tomorrow and get a better look. Replaced the alternator belt which was probably the easiest I’ve ever done, what a joy to work on a Japanese car Took it for a blast and now I’m getting used to a manual gearbox again. Noticed a weird noise when accelerating after cruising in 3rd and 4th. Sounded like a tin of washers spinning?? Some more pics of the rails and leaky bits:

SVT in the logbook is the engine type, as far as I know there was never a SVT model, but at the NBFL in 2001 introduction all the 1.8 engines were equipped with Sequential Valve Timing which gave a bit more power and filled in the torque curve to offset the weight increase from the NB. Not aware of a 15th anniversary edition, but Mazda did loads of Special Editions which had trim changes. The only really special edition in 2004 was the Mazdaspeed, which had a turbocharged engine and 17 inch wheels. As far as I know that was left hand drive and USA only.
Great thing about having a mx as a second car is that you can take your time. If you find that you are stuck just leave it on the stands, have a beer and ask for help tomorrow! There is always an expert in the club who will know the answer. Welcome and enjoy.
Thanks. I agree but it’s not quite like that. I had to find another car as my main car needs the rear lower suspension arms replacing, (booked in for the 29th), it needs them replacing so bad that I daren’t drive it, especially with the state of the roads in the UK. I could have got a boring car but I’ve never had an open top car before and always liked the MX5. I’m finding out that they’re a great car to work on and I always liked Japanese design. Not sure what I’m going to do about the bendy over bit though
