Hi there im new to having an MX-5 and to this forum. Im a local Norwich lad (only 20) and iv bought a well used but slightly rough Eunos Roadster V special to ‘do up’ over the summer. One thing that has me puzzled is the recent sunny weather has been fantastic but ever since the hot weather has arrived resulting in the top being down all the time. When it comes to putting the hood back on it feels like it has shrunk quite considerably! It takes a good couple of goes of me sitting in the middle of the car, pushing the hood locks down together, which, on the first go, hardly reaches the catches (something that has never happened before). After some shouting i finally get the thing to lock in properly but no way should it be this much hassle all the time! Do the hoods have a habit of shrinking after a very hot day or becoming tight due to being down all the time?
Cheers,
Ciaran
Hi Ciaran
Good to have you aboard - I work in Norwich so am blasting about daily so look fwd to someone who knows what a friendly flash of headlamps is all about!!
It is likely that your hood has shrunk over time, especially if it is original - has it any other tell tale signs of aging, namely a V crack appearing just behind the doors, near the seat belt turret, or above the door glass where the roof folds?
Happy to look at it if you are around sometime (I fit new hoods too by the way!).
Cheers, Ian
Hi and welcome.
I’m sure someone will give you some advice about your hood, think you may be able to adjust it?
I did find mine was a bit harder to do up after being down for a while
Hi, some hoods do get very tight and tricky to get latched shut again. One of the 5s I drive regularly is particularly difficult. What you can do is flip the latch bits that hook on first and you can then line them up with the catch bits, push them over the catches so you know they are correctly located before you push up the main catch. That probably makes no sense at all so pop along to an Eastern Region meet or out Tech day this Sunday for a demo…
Hi, Hi and Hi everyone.
Good, iv been waiting for another MX5 driver to flash me chortle…
Ahh the tech day sounds good, when, where and what time? Would be great to meet everyone.
Have to say, this is a really friendly forum! Didnt expect many responses.
Anyway, yes im doing the latch flipping onto the hooks already. Strangely enough i had no problems at all today, which was due to me putting the hood up when i parked up. The hood is definitely worn but isnt leaking and seals onto the windscreen well enough. My drivers leccy window is buggered aswell, got all the cables for it and had a stab at it but failed miserably when it came to getting the wire out of the motor. Door lock decided to break that day aswell. The joys of doing a car up ay!
Click here for the tech day topic. It’s looking to be quite a quiet one so far with no major engine rebuilds or the like so pop along it’s a great day with a great atmostphere.
