Help Please - NC1 Import With Aftermarket Pioneer Headunit - sound from passenger speaker only

  1. My model of MX-5 is: NC1 2.0 PRHT Imported From Singapore_
  2. I’m based near: County Durham
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: Speakers Not Working with After-market Head-unit

Hi all,

The only speaker that is working in our imported NC1 since we bought it is the passenger side speaker - the drivers side and rears are not working. I’ve checked the obvious (balance settings) and they are all set to 0. The head unit is a Pioneer double-din.

Any help or advice on where to start would be appreciated - thank you

David

The head unit needs sliding out to check the wiring connections I guess. Maybe the harness to the ISO isn’t quite clicked in??

Thank you - yes, I tried to access the back of the unit through the glovebox a few weeks ago but couldn’t get any purchase on it. I think this may be my next move, thank you.

I’m sure I’d read stories about some after market units not being compatible with the OEM set-up, but can’t find the threads on here now. I think we are non-Bose

its initially scary accessing any stereo, but get yourself some trim tools (essentially, plastic spatulas but a bit more rigid - and saves messing up the interior plastics as a tissue-wrapped screwdriver really won’t do it), read up on where the screws are and where to press and pull, and it’s actually quite easy. Check the connectors first, and if disconnecting and reconnecting fixes it, then you’re done; then it’s often easiest to check the head unit by swapping it for another even temporarily (it doesn’t have to be fitted into the car to do this). If the other speakers then work, it’s the head unit. If not then its likely the wiring to the speakers or dead speakers - various tests but circuit tester is a good one. it may be the loom, but it’s most likely the connectors at the head unit end and if not then at the speakers, or dead speakers. It’s a good way to get to know your car, too…
