I inherited my 92 year old Dads red 2004 MX5 a1.8 manual soft top a acouple of days ago - its great and in wonderful condition but Id be grateful for your collective wisdom in helping this newbie please. She’s so gorgeous, I want to nurture her. My apologies if I’ve posted in the wrong forum topic.
On the insurance paperwork its called a Mazda MX5 Icon Cabriolet - i need to get a cover (and possibly a hard top)for it as it’s now going to be stored outside. Does this make it a Mk1, Mk2 or other Mk please? seems I need to know for covers and tops.
Can I spray the soft top to reproof it? I’m anxious it may leak as has been stored under cover since new - don’t want any surprise leaks.
Thanks in anticipation of your help - I’ll ask in local forum for garage recommendations.
The soft tops can be cleaned with products from Autoglym and waterproofed with Fabsil or again products from Autoglym or Renovo, do a search for those products on Google. Determine which hood matetial you have first, cloth (mohair) or vinyl before buying the products, you may well have a cloth hood on the Ice though.
If it is an ‘Icon’ model, could be a MK2 1.8(750 made) or a MK2.5(1.6 or 1.8), so 2000/1 or 2005
Let us have the year of registration and hopefully can assist with full spec.
Sounds like a nice car - hopefully you will have some fun in it.
Sorry, just re-read post, 2004? surprising as the second coming of the Icon was 2005 according to the club model spec listing.
If the softtop is cloth(mohair) rather than vinyl, take the opportunity to clean it carefully and condition with fabsil gold, especially if it is going to be left outside.
However as you say yours is red, then its maybe not an Icon edition?
This is not unusual, I have seen many listing errors by DVLA around that time, with Artics being called Euphonics and vice versa. Maybe post a picture (particularly showing the side and anything on a badge under the wing indicators) and that might help with its ID
