Did you get a wiring diagram for the fog lights ? Somewhere I have a full wiring diagram for the fog lights. I have all the bits (got them from Dewsbury autosalvage) and bought loads of connectors and wiring. But it was a shed load of work so have the fogs fitted but not wired. Will get round to it when I have more time. I can dig out the diagrams and email them to you if you still need them. They aren’t brilliant quality but useable.
Wayne - sorry I didn’t see this thread back in 2009, relay switching is my speciality! Soon as I started reading page 1, I knew you needed a latch relay.
I’ve read a lot of comments about how does this work? It’s simple. There are two coils acting as a magnet when energised, and there is also a small premanent magnet. How it works? - You energise one coil momentarilly (the press to make switch which then releases) the relay contacts change state, then the magnet holds this contact in the closed position. When you want to turn it off, you make the other coil, which works in opposition to the first coil and to the magnet, releasing the contacts. It can also be done with one coil, but you need more contacts to change the coil connections round, so it assumes reverse polarity.
Another variation? involves more contacts on the relay, energise one coil, a contact makes the coil self energised, so you don’t have to keep the push switch pressed. The second coil is stronger than the first, it overcomes the first coil and trips the hold contact, releasing the relay. This was the older way, made more expensive due to increased coil costs and extra contacts, largely now replaced by the coil/magnet design.
Oh dear - and all that chat!
Added -sorry about the Spelling mistakes - in a rush! (Now edited)
Apologies for the thread revival but it seems to fit in best with my query & people who have solved the problem may (hopefully) be able to solve mine!
I have a mk2.5 with these (http://www.mx5parts.co.uk/angel-eyes-driving-lamps-models-p-1772.html) fitted into the holes in the bumper where the fog lights usually go. I currently have them wired up so that the ring around the outside comes on with sidelights & dipped beam & then the bulb in the middle on with the main beam. I also only have the rear fog switch (rocker type mentioned in an earlier post).
I’ve now managed to get the double fog switch off eBay & was wondering if it is easy enough to switch the wiring so that the main bulb in the lights comes on when the front fog switch is pressed? Will I need the relay which is mentioned earlier (either the VW one or the Maplins one - are these the same?). My local Maplins has one in stock so I could get one if necessary. Also, will I have problems with the rear fog light? My switch also has the front with on/off positions but the rear springs back. Also, I presume that front & rear will work independently?
I’ve seen the bit re taking the switch apart but really don’t fancy trying that - not with my luck!
If anyone is able to help it would be greatly appreciated!!
If anyone is planning this mod in future I’m gonna post a step by step guide in the next couple of weeks with a parts guide and wiring instructions to cover both mk1 and mk2
Did you manage to do a step by step guide and if so where would i find it, im looking to fit one of these switches into my mk2 and would like to know how to wire rear fogs to switch as old switch rocker type
I bought some fog lights thinking they would be an easy install on my mk2.5. It certainly is not an easy install!! I also bought a Ring fog light fitting kit and a double fog light switch and still can’t get it to work.
Sorry I’ve just come off the back of an 80 hour week and the wife’s on nights last night and tonight so ive got the little one but I have to do it in the next 2 weeks as my mot is due
