Normally I’m more of a Jag man, but I fancied something cheap, fun, reliable and suitable for an imminent trip to Belgium with some biker mates.
Being too old to bounce down the road I decided against buying a bike for the trip and thought an Mx5 with the hood down is a close substitute! (they have slow bikes)
How much stuff are you planning on packing to take to Belgium? I’ve hard the saying “everything but the kitchen sink”. You’re not actually planning on taking yours are you?
Lovely looking car, I’ll keep an eye out for it on the local roads. Just back from Bruges, you’ll be amazed where you can find cubby holes to stash some beer & wine.
Thanks guys, luckily the gîte we are staying in has bedding and I sincerely hope, some furniture, so apart from a few clothes there should be plenty of room in the five to pick up a crate or two of 33 Export and a few kilos of merguez sausages on the way.
Got safely back from my trip to the Ardennes on the border areas of France & Belgium.
The Mx5 didn’t miss a beat and was even more fun than I’d hoped.
The highlight was trying to keep up with the bikers on some deserted, sweeping bends through the forest, keeping the revs in the sweet spot around the 4 to 5k mark. What a lovely engine, revs sweetly and the box is lovely too.
The bikers seemed pretty amazed that I stayed with them through that section, but I was having the time of my life!
No doubt about it, I made the right choice of vehicle.
A couple of minor niggles, the wipers always start off very slow but after a few minutes they gradually speed up to a nearly normal pace, and there are quite a lot of suspension rattles on rough road surfaces but I don’t have much to compare it against. It holds the road well and tracks straight but sounds pretty much a bag of nails on some sections.
