Hi

Hi.

My name is Brian, and I have recently been informed of the MX-5 owners club

Myself and partner both own MX-5’s. Mine is a (2005) 55 plate 2.0i Sport (17" wheel rims) in Silver, and my partner’s is a (2004) 04 plate 1.8 Euphonic (16" rims) in Black.

I could use some advise though please… as mentioned, I have the 2.0i Sports model with 17" wheel rims, and in order to pass my 1st MOT I need 2 new rear tyres, although have decided to replace the front 2 at the same time, but I am unsure what to buy???

Mazda UK have not been as helpful as I feel they could be, providing me with little guidance - can anyone advise me?

My present tyres (originals) are Michelin 205x45x17x84w.

I am thinking about replacing them with either Avon or Yokohama tyres? purely because of cost, but wondered if i will be compromising or impeding the performance of the car?

Looking in the dealerships, it seems to me that on the 1.8 16"rim models they use Yokohama tyres as a standard, yet on the 2.0 sports 17"rim models they use Michelin as a standard - I dont know why?

I have been told by my local Mazda dealer that there is no difference between Yokohama and Avon tyres, both are suitable and either will do…but they dont seem too convincing.

I can get the better deal on a set of 4 Avon tyres from my local garage, but, to play it safe, I should get Michelin tyres i guess? But they are more than double the cost of Avon tyres. The Yokohamas are £100 more than the Avons also?

Can anyone help me? Is there a recommended tyre for my car? Or am I safe to put on Avon tyres ??

Many Thanks, Brian

Hi Brian,  This is only my opinion and experience but I have used Avons in the past and found them to be good allround tyres and good value or money.

I am not the slowest or most careful driver in the world when it comes to tyres but I am not a maniac either so for my requirements they were fine.

I have used Yokohomas also in the past but on a different car and again, have no complaints.

The best advice seems to be -  buy the best tyre you can afford, I like to feel like I am getting value for money also.

I am sure there will be some better qualified (or more helpful) advice along in a minute

Let us know what you decide though
