Hillclimb

Hi all, just to ask if anyone can help out in my quest to get into hill-climbing.

I’m looking for a race suit, helmet and shoes all have to be FIA approved to 8856 standard - my vitals are:

Height 5’10"

Chest 44"

Waist 34/36

Inside leg 32"

Hat 23-1/2"

Any help or suggestions appreciated

Thanks in advance

You should be able to get them all on line.   When I was rallying we used to get ours from City Speed (Gloucester) Ltd  but I think they are long gone.

Demon Tweaks in Wrexham

Stand 21 At Brands

GPR at Silverstone to name but a few.

I can supply you HRX product.

I have found AWS in Ashford Kent to be helpful and reasonable on price. http://www.advanced-wear.co.uk/

You don’t need shoes to a spec, but you do need gloves.

Helmets vary a lot in price, but I’m happy enough with my Hedtec helmet bought online which at the time was the better spec and price than V2 although it looks as though V2 have caught up now.

Hey guys thanks for the replies… should have mentioned my limited budget ie looking for second hand stuff really… lots of lovely gear online but too pricy for me.

Didn’t realise I don’t need boots so that will save me some cash

Looking for race suit at say £120 and skid lid for £80 to make it a nice round figure of £200

ps any one got a roll bar

Thanks again you lovely people :))

Update:

Pleased to say I’ve now got a Sparco race suit for £124 “result” what would we do without ebay

My first Hillclimb on 25th July looks promising now… just looking for a skid lid now

I’m not into bikes any more, but as I recall, the general advice was never to buy
2nd hand crash helmets. You don’t know their history.

Skid lid.. second hand, your right of course it's not advisable to buy second hand and from eBay as you can't check it over.. I'm on a tight budget though so quite desperate so every pound is a prisoner.. however I do find comfort in the fact I'm not riding a bike and hope my roof will take most of the impact..
Thanks for your advise though.. I will most certainly buy a new one when I get some more cash..
Just need to get racing :))))

Even a known-history no-impact skid lid can wear out with time, especially the open-face type.  I would not be here now if I had not replaced my two-year old Everoak Racemaster with a new one, back in the 1960s when I was was young and stupid and riding a 650. The old one was beginning to flex a bit, feeling a bit too supple.  A week after getting the replacement I had a head-on (literally head to head) collision at night with an unlit scooter. Two weeks in hospital with only a smashed upper right maxilla; with the old helmet think egg shell and teaspoon.

Go for a full-face NEW helmet that is a really good comfortable close fit.  Think of it as an Insurance Policy, you only have one head.  And it need only be the cost of a couple of tankfuls of petrol.

we have a bank of these for general club use at Club events where needed. for value they are hard to beat, I think

is it the Wiscombe hill climb?

Hooray… helmet purchased (second hand…sorry) and now got confirmation of a place at Wiscombe

… Happy Days …

Also news just in… sold my push bike so looking for a ‘brand new’ roll-bar

Thanks for all advise / help

Looking forward to 25th July everything now in place… well almost… yes I’ve bought a ‘Brand New’ roll bar from the very nice chaps at http://www.trlanefabs.co.uk/ … just need to fit it, Its reassuringly quite a major job to fit, and this after reconditioning all my brake calipers that decided it was the best time to seize up (cheers) still it should improve my 0-60 of 8.85 seconds now the front wheels aren’t semi-seized.

And yes Andy I will be taking some underseal with me should the opportunity arise to have unrestricted access to the underside of the car (hope not though) and thanks for the donor calipers.

Look out for car 161… please wave on my way back down the hill, on the way up may lead to an up close and personal greeting… Men and multi-tasking scenario Wink

Thanks everyone

Hi guys, bit late on the update but my inaugural hillclimb at Wiscombe was a great success, albeit nearly short-lived, after passing the scrutineers I then went to line up at the start of my first practice run I was stopped because I had my roof down and wearing open face helmet without goggles, oops… didn’t get that memo, so after much eye fluttering (yes it was a female) I was permitted to race on the proviso I had goggles on the next runs… Well I asked and asked all around the paddock to no avail… panic panic how to blow £75 in 60 seconds, then after much help from Jon Langmead (Lotus elan S3) it was agreed I could continue but with my roof up (once scrutineered your car has to remain in that condition)… Thank the Lord and of course Jon who consequently went on to win the event I was racing in. This said… now that my roof was up I struggled to get into a comfortable race type seating position now that my helmeted head was rammed in the roof… after some adjustment including retracting my neck into my chest I resumed my days racing…  So you get two practice runs and then two timed runs… first run (Topless) = 63 seconds, second run = 57 seconds, Third run = 55 seconds, Last run = 55 seconds… I was just very chuffed to improve my own times by 8 seconds… really got the bug now so roll on September 5th & 6th… I’m coming to get you Jon Tongue Out

Well done on your achievement, do you have any pics

What was Jon’s winning time?

Hi there Mr Z … Jon’s time was 44.83 seconds in his classic Lotus Elan S3 (696kg) so I’ve got quite a hill to climb (Pun intended) however a group of MX5 (Mk1) recorded a best time on the day of 48.10 seconds so I think this maybe a more realistic challenge for me this September.

I do have some pictures but can’t attach them to my postings for some reason ??

Cheers

Hi guys,

Just to say I have posted pictures and updates for future events etc, on my Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/GoldfingerRacing

Please say hi and like the page if you would

Thanks in advance

Great news… got my place in the www.fiveclubs.org.uk  hillclimb at Wiscombe on Sat 5th and Sun 6th.

Look out for #120 I’m coming through

Wow! That is seriously good value for a good brand too.
