HLA rattle and new oil

I’ve read a million posts on this so I have some idea what I need to do to get rid (temporarily) of my HLA rattle.  My only question now is:

As my car had an oil and filter change about 6 months back and is due one in 3 months or so, can I just top up my oil and add Wynns Oil Treatment to get me through until my next complete oil service?

Thanks to Taff and others for bearing with my previous novice-like queries!

The Baron Devil

I’d forget the Wynns treatments as they are pretty rubbish, I’ve used them before on oil changes and they don’t shift or do anything, garages don’t generally use them either I’m told.

Use Forte products as they do work very well, I know MX owners who’ve used them when changing oil, left the car running for up to an hour with it in and then changed the oil. No more HLA rattle at all.

I’m doing mine this weekend.

To answer your other question, I have been topping up my oil since the last change and it will stop the rattle for a short period.

My oil change isn’t really due but I’m doing it anyway as I hate the rattle!

Got to disagree, most Wynns products are rubbish, but the engine flush works very well. I used it back in ? 2004 and have had no HLA rattle since. It must not be added to oil and the car driven around. Follow the instructions on the tin to the letter, a new fill of decent oil and you’ll be right

Ok then…top up oil for now - perhaps throw in oil treatment then get full oil change plus a flush later on in year?

CHEERS GUYS!!! Angry

If you are using a decent semi or full synthetic oil, you don’t need any additives

I Agree  and I will be doing a flush on the next oil change.

If I HAD just bought some Wynns oil treatment (425ml) - how much MIGHT I mix in with my oil?  Let’s go with 1litre of oil.  Half a can of Wynns for this?

According to their website http://www.wynns.uk.com/Product.aspx?p=51335&g=GRP_CONS_OIL 1 can does for 3.5 to 6 litres of oil. I,m glad it’s just a “thought”

Put it this way: my HLA noise didn’t go after nearly 2 litrs of new oil…so I put the whole can of Wynns in.

This morning: not a single sound.  Purs like a kitty.

Fingers crossed Geoff!  Thanks for help…

Using an engine flush is the best thing to do as it cleans sticky gum from tappets and other parts .( older rover k series engines are particularly bad and do improve greatly with a flush.)

We use Forte but i’m guessing Wynns flush will still work well .

So a good flush should cure the problem with nice clean parts and additives to oil tend to just hide a problem.

Also if an engine is left un used for a while then oil will be forced from tappets by the camlobes pressing down on them, a few seconds of tapping after start up while they refill with oil would be normal.     in my opinion{#emotions_dlg.smile}

 Agreed

You need to run a engine flush,(follow the instuctions) which is a cleaner(which is basically paraffin) and break down the old sticky oil from off the HLA’s and if it is that bad it my take a couple of changes done every 6 months before it goes, once gone make sure that you stay on top of the servicing, oil flush will not be needed for a long while again and use a good 10/40 semi synth oil on refill, the roadster was not built with full synth in mind, always change the filter after running an engine flush.

But as said if an engine is left unused, then you are still not doing it any favours.
