With the hold button on, the transmission will not change above the gear indicated next to the gear stick. L range has a 1, S range has a 2 and D range has a 3 I think from memory.
Earlier autos had no separate ECU for the auto box, so the ‘hold’ button simply stopped you from using ‘overdrive’ - I.E. top gear.
Sounds like you have one of the first with an ECU.
Leave her in overdirve (light off on the dash) i run two Auto’s buddy Mk 1 1.8 and a MK 2 Only the 1.8 MK 1 auto as the gearbox ECU behind the dash, the MK 1 1.6 did not have one, but they never go wrong, press the overdrive button off (light on ) and you should hear the gear box /engine noise change/ kick down, it will be working.
M-m
I keep mine in overdrive unless I want to play then I turn it off.
