Hole in the engine crankcase

Awfully sorry, but I am unable to provide a photo, so I have to try to explain!  With the engine block stripped bare and upended, there is a hole in the internal casting beneath #4 cylinder.  It’s about 4cm long by 1cm wide and runs parallel to the internal main oil gallery.  None of the other 3 cylinders have this.  Is this normal or have I a damaged engine block?  Many thanks, in anticipation.

Ken - you know me - I’m no engine man. But does it look machined (Smooth slot) or a bit jagged (rough edges - a Crack)? I’m holding my breath!

Jagged and rough edges I’m afraid!

Guess we both expect bad news then, sorry. Head banging time?

I seem to remember someone asking the same question some time ago. I think that the general consensus was its normal.

Phew, that’s a relief! Thanks Robbie.

That’s assuming it’s the same thing and my memory serves me correctly. You may what to have a bit of a search.

Yes that is perfectly normal.I have sent you pic by email
