Horn push removal Mk1

Can someone tell me the right way to remove this please.
Can i assume that you use a screwdriver like tool to lever it up and off. It’s just that it’s the first step to refurbish my Nardi steering wheel and i dont wish to start the job by breaking the horn push

Thanks

Steve

Can you post a photo of the steering wheel?

Here we are Robbie. Not wonderful image in dark garage

The chromed horn push will prise off; fingernails help. If you don’t want to risk scratching the metal with a small screwdriver, you can get a plastic trim removal tool, or get one of those disposable plastic dinner knives. The black trim piece is an interferance fit on a series of small bolts, using plastic inserts. These sometimes come off. I used siicone. But the horn push really secures it in place.

There will be a single wire connector. Loosen the hub nut until the last few turns. Then rock the steering wheel from side to side, to loosen the stiction. You might need to use a rubber mallet… It will pop off the spline, but leaving the nut on saves your nose from being broken. Don’t forget to add some marks to help you line it up when refitting.

I’ve seen various attempts to refurbish these wheels. Frankly, the results look very DIY, even one so-called professional refurbishment. Proper refurbishment means completely stripping back the whole construction of the wheel, and is very very expensive. Its cheaper to just buy a new Nardi. So temper your expectations of the results. Probably good to see a few videos how these Nardi wheels were made.

DO NOT PRIZE IT OFF! The button needs to rotate anti clockwise 1/6th of a turn to release the tabs.

To remove the horn switch assembly, it has to be prised off.

I have removed and fitted quite a few of these over the past 20+ years.

Hi Robbie,

AST and Jacob Rees are saying contradictory things so it would be good if you were to adjudicate on this.

From the photo posted by AST it looks like the tensioned spring /wire that straddles the horn push holds the horn push tight like a wedge

Meanwhile I just sit on my hands.

And thanks to all who replied

TBH I took the wheel off many years ago when i took the dashboard out but its so long ago i can’t remember and of course stupidly did not take photos, doh!!

Hi Mr Impatient here,

AT is correct and it’s a good job I have long fingernails as thats what I started with. When you feel it start to move then use something to prise it out, i used an old flat bone handled kitchen knife and it just popped out. Power supply is via electrical spade connection and i have marked the orientation

Thanks again to all who replied

Steve

To be fair, you described it as the horn push. So I thought you were removing the button itself not the whole assembly. I just misunderstood. I didn’t want you to break any of the plastic tabs while taking the button off the assembly.

Hi Jacob
Having reread your post I now realise you and I were at cross purposes.

No problem at all

Regards

Steve
