How far car safety has come in 50 years

2009 Chevy Malibu vs 1959 Chevy Bel Air

Yank Iron fans, look away now.

The comments on YouTube make interesting reading. The Bel Air fan boys almost attribute the poor crashworthiness to this example allegedly being an Impala dressed up with Bel Air trim …

I keep telling her to wear the seat belts! [:D]

Fifth Gear (I think) did a similar crash with an old model and a new model Renault Espace.  My mate had an old one and he loved it, the new one came out and he slated it. “not solid, all plastic” he complained.

Anyway on the test, the old one crushed the door trapping the crash test dummy under the dash with the brake pedal up in his midriff, fatal for the driver.  The new one didn’t even deploy the airbags as the impact was absorbed  by the crumple zones.  The drivers door still opened.  As you say safety has come a long way

It needs to have come a long way the amount of muppet drivers on the roads these days.

I think in some respects the saftey aspect has had a negative effect in that people now feel so safe and cocooned intheir euoboxes that they drive badley and recklessly because they think they are safe.

Shame really

You won’t get me to admit to “bad” or “reckless” on this forum, but you are most probably right. I do think that I am more “careful” in my Roadster than I am in my Golf Mk5.

Worse in the past; more drivers back then who had never taken a test. And then you always have the stories about the drunken uncle using the kerb as a guide to drive straight… But back then, they got away with it because of the lack of traffic.

People, if anything, today, are much more aware of the consequences of driving. I remember the days when people never bothered to use a seatbelt. Now its second nature.

Careful Tony, you’ll upset the capt Wink

Muppet driver

Proof at last!! I always new the muppets were out there. LOL !!
