How often do you redline?

I borrowed this topic from one of my bike forums and thought it would just be interesting. So I just wondered how often people take their cars to the tacho red line. Not having had mine long and still in the process of checking it over and making sure all the fluids etc are changed or topped up, meaning at the moment in my case it’s a no. What about the more long term and regular users of their cars?

My Mk1 has 100k on the clock and is supercharged. I redline it most times I drive it, you just gotta love the sc whineWink

mines an automatic so i cant red line it it will allways change gear before it gets there mabee theres somting wrong with it

Almost every time I drive it, as long as it’s properly warm.

Don’t be scared of red lines. Everything up to and including the redline is within the normal operating range of the engine. If it was a problem, the engineers would put the red line lower, or have 100 engines to change on warranty every day.

When I had an MX5, I used to treat 2 to 4000 rpm like a bad neighbourhood, you just get through it quickly and avoid going back there if at all possible.

If it wasn’t occasionally bouncing off the rev limiter I felt I wasn’t trying.

It varies - when used for M20 commuting it rarely goes over 4000 as that’s better for economy and gives 35mpg, but when competing at autosolos, gymkhanas, sprints, a few trackdays and 12 laps of the proper Nurburgring it goes all the way with ease.

That said, I’ve just realised I’ve had the car 4.5 years now and put over 80,000km on it and used it for many events - I really must get round to doing a cambelt change soon as I have no idea when it was done before I had it…

Sounds like a plan for the future. I must investigate an SC.Smile

I there another way to drive a '5?..Big Smile

Well the sun is out up here in Stafford and so now I am sure the fluids are ok, I might just go for a blast. If the roads dry up then it might be the Honda Blackbird instead…now that’s a red line!!!

Mine usually gets red lined with the Mrs in the car, the engine note is preferable to the whining about driving like a looney!  Like she can talk by the way, she has a Suzuki swift that gets a flogging every time it goes out!

I take mine to the line everytime i drive it.

I do mostly long runs (180 miles) so wait for the engine to get warm and give it a bit of welly every now and again during the run. Some roads are just asking for some high rev driving.

Took the bike out instead, but slippery roads put pay to much play, except the 10K + red line on occasion. Maybe next time the Mazda!!!

Thats the great thing about these cars isn’t it? You can use all the revs without going stupidly fast. Plus, the old Italian tune up keeps it in shape

I save redlining mine for track, around town / on the commute I keep it under 4 for the fuel consumption.
