Hello just wondering if any body can help me how old does a mx5 have to be for classic car insurance,I fancy a mx5 and have been looking around and found a 2004 mx5 I asked for a quote for a limited mileage of 4,000 mile and was giving a quote for £600.00 with £250.00 excess I think is a lot this is with  multi policy I have the sons and daughter on this with 6 years no claims for me when we ran two cars,I also have another policy on more than for my main car with max no claims.will I have to get one that is over 20 years old?think I had a TR7 with footman and James or Adrian flux years ago on a classic policy, that was a lot less than my main car I only want to use it for 6 months of the year.

thanx John

Seems a lot,if you are over 50 try saga I pay less than than £200 a year with no mileage restrictions

Not sure if a 2004 car would qualify for classic status. I assume its when you start going over 20 years old. Why not look at na’s, I picked up a tidy v spec for £1200 last week. I already had an s-ltd insured with footman james and as they are both considered classic they added the v spec to the policy for £35. That’s 2 cars insured for a year for £140.

yes 58 in January live SR7

Thanks will keep looking for a older car.

My 16 year old Mk2 is on a classic car policy insured through Peter Best.

Fifteen years old seems to be a trigger point for various forms of insurance to go through a step change, not necessarily for the better.

eg 1. On my old Vectra when it passed fifteen Admiral’s renewal quote went from 190-ish the previous years to 580, and a phone call only reduced it to 450-ish, John Lewis then insured it for about 175 when I politely walked away from Admiral, and held it around that price for the next five years.
eg 2. Same car, the AA refused to cover it for basic breakdown recovery when it passed 15, despite never having been needed. RAC were quite happy and only charged the normal rates, and brought it home at 20 when the spring broke in the cambelt tensioner. Amazingly someone actually bought it off me knowing what had stopped the engine.
eg 3. Direct line were going to double the insurance on my old Astra when it reached 15, but bits fell out of its clutch just before just that (so scrapped) and I politely said goodbye to Direct Line instead of renewing.

Being friendly and polite to the insurers has helped because the same agent at Admiral remembered me and insured the MX5 for a bit under 200.

EDIT 29/10/16

A few minutes ago I renewed the insurance that had been transferred from the old Vectra to the new Mazda3.

The renewal quote yesterday from JL almost doubled the last year’s premium by asking for 350.  So instead I’ve paid 198 to Direct Line for the same cover.

There is no logic to insurers.  Just shop around, but stick with the more reputable ones.

I was told when I owned a Mk 1 16 yrs old can be considered for classic insurance, can’t remember which company it was.

Seems OTT with that quote for an NB, got my two cars on a multi cover,  about £460 last year for my daily and my Mk3. I’m trying for less when I renew this year.

Hi,

Please feel free to give us a try for insurance if you like. If you wanted to PM me some contact details I’d be happy to arrange for one of my quotes team to give you a call back.

We have classic / limited mileage schemes that can cater for mx-5s of any age.

Regards,

Dan.

It seems that some insurers now treat the MK2.5 as a classic - well they are all over 10 years old now… and getting rarer.

Use the comparison sites on moneysavingexpert.com is my advice.

Just remember that no claims bonus does not accrue and is not taken into account. No claims bonus can generally be preserved for 2 years if you have a normal policy with no claims that you may want to reuse at some point.

I’ve got a 2000 on a w plate, just had the renewal through for £162.00 I’m 45 and live in Birmingham, Peter Best Insurance are great to deal with. I had my Rover SD1 insured with them as well
