Just planned and booked our next MX-5 driving adventure next month in Brittany. Looking forward to some lovely coastal drives and wonderful fresh seafood. Besides looking forward to the trip, I also thought about future trips. First and foremost, we have enjoyed some fantastic road trips in Europe including Northern Spain, Portugal Italy and France. One of the reasons I gave up the bikes was that riding in the UK became less and less enjoyable compared with some of the stunning roads in the Alps and Pyrenees for example. I digress. At the age of 66 the plan is to keep our present MX-5 for the long term ie. until we can no longer get in or out of said vehicle and enjoy several more European road trips. The car is strictly a fair weather pleasure and always garaged over winter. I would be interested to learn who is the oldest MX-5 owner (still regularly driving their MX-5) in the club? It may give me some inspiration for the years ahead!
Age is a state of mind. I gave up riding bikes at 65 because I was too old. Bought a VTR1000 when I turned 70 because I missed the bike so much. Replaced it with a new Thruxton 1200 a year later. Sold the Thruxton in 2023 to buy the Mazda. My eightieth is approaching much faster than I would like but the wife and I are out in the MX-5 with the top down whenever we can. Winter here is a bit milder than the UK and we much prefer our winter rides as the sun here gets a bit much to tolerate in the summer. Would guess there are plenty older than me enjoying the 5.
If you want to do something and you can do it then you should do it. Age really is irrelevant. I’m 67 and i don’t see myself stopping driving my MX-5 or riding my motorbikes any time soon until I’m physically or mentally unable. My life mantra has always been to regret doing something rather than regret not doing it. Enjoy life!
Old age is a state of mind. I’m 70 and still working. Have my NC Sportech (and a V6 A4 Cabrio and a Lotus Cortina) If you want some advice and inspiration listen to this
My Dad is 82 and my Mum is 80, they both still have trips out in their NB, roof down too.
Granted the trips are not as far as they use to be but they are still having a great time .
Inspired
Thank you for all your replies, very positive! I’m hoping for at least another ten years of MX-5 road trips btw so not ready to hang up the string-back driving gloves just yet. I still enjoy driving especially now the daily commute is consigned to history and I am currently taking regular lessons with an IAM instructor with a view to taking my advanced test before the end of the year.
Don’t worry mate. You are an enthusiast, post on car forums and continually look to improve your skills. You are probably better than 99% of other road users. Keep driving.
Just bought mine. 81 years old.
Congratulations and wishing you many smiles per mile.
Made the decision to keep throwing buckets of lolly at getting my ‘02 NBFL Madge sorted in anticipation of retiring at 66 this year with view to keeping her 10 years. I’ll see how she and I fair if I get that far.
For good measure I am also learning how to ride a motorbike
Good luck with your IAM
80 in October, 20-20 vision, regular gym user, swim, cycle & of course
still drive both MX-5’s, off to Oulton August 9 Miata Trophy.
I’m 71 and have been running MX-5s since 1997.
I had a stroke 18 months ago and had to sell my last MX-5 as it just sat in the garage. Luckily I have now made a complete recovery and have just bought another MX-5 and enjoying open top motoring again. It feels like real freedom.
I live within an hours drive of Snetterton and Cadwell race circuits and have regular drives in the MX-5 to watch classic car racing.
Off again on Sunday 10th to watch Classic Touring cars at Snetterton. Make the most of it while you can!!!
At the young age of 81 I have been driving my Mk1 for 23 year. It’s a garage queen in the winter but well used in the summer months. I hope to continue until I can no longer get out of it🤣
A nice chap local to me we both know well, retire teacher, was put off his big 1200cc super bike by his family at the age of 76. Too many A9 fatalities. Fit as a fiddle gym every 3 days etc. So…he got a lovely one owner RF last week! His 1st 5. Had it professionally 4 stage shined, and chassis stripped and injected etc. It’s all in the head…unless your spine and lower limbs say other wise!
Great. I started om bikes at 70 yrs. So you will be OK.
At 45 I would definitely consider myself as one of the youngest owners
Seems to be a car that attracts the retired, cheap to buy and run I guess. People looking to enjoy life’s simpler pleasures rather than chasing 0-60 times or trying to impress the neighbours. I bought mine off a lovely gentleman who bought it as a retirement present to himself and kept it for 16 years.
